| Haha, can't believe nobody has commented yet! Only the british could write a song about actually *sharing* their shepherds pie with a fly : ) I just love the third section! Beautiful! | |

| I think this song is one of those good old british songs about being happy with the simple pleasures, just like Song of a Baker by the Small Faces. The british seem to have (or had) a beautiful way of seeing the best in the most basic and seemingly boring of things. A good way to be methinks! | |

I don't know for sure, but I've always seen this song as a song about the anticipation waiting for a drug dealer. It bears some lyrical similarities to the Velvet Underground song "I'm Waiting For the Man", which is about just that. One such similarity is the line "There is a wait so long, you'll never wait so long.", which would refer to the feeling of waiting for what seems like forever for your dealer to show up. The similarity in the Velvet Underground song is "He's never early, he's always late. First thing you learn is you always gotta wait." The "dirty beard hangs" line from this song also reminds me of the "Feelin' sick and dirty" line from the VU song, that image of the unkempt appearance of a junkie. From that same verse is the reference to "nervous walking" which to me sounds like the walk of somebdy who's feeling a little paranoid and nervous about the transaction which they're about to take part in. Finally the "nowhere plains" sounds like a way of referring to the mind-numbed space which you get to when you are high. Not sure if anybody sees this song the same way, but that's always the impression I got. : ) |

| I think it's about more than sex. I believe it was actually written for Jenny Rylance, his "girlfriend" who was flicking between him and Rod Stewart, and the nature of the song is "You have to *love* me, not be halfway between." | |

The most beautiful love song ever performed. Steve Marriott once said before performing it live "...you know what I mean. That red face you get when you've been f**king all night!" I like to think that when he wrote it some 15 years earlier it had more significance to him than that though. This song has possibly the finest vocal performance ever given. |
