This song is in now way, shape, or form about a child molester. You cannot think of Charlie as a child, he is a young man coming into his age and sexuality. Charlie is closeted and that's where he is hiding, in the closet. Being good and compliant feels so damn bad, because he is living a lie and suffering in silence about his sexuality. Charlie begins to experiment with his sexuality and that's why he comes home smelling like shaving cream. Not because a child molester is attacking him. In the bridge CHARLIE is talking to the LISTENER. There is no imaginary child molester talking to Charlie. Why would the child molester not get sleep at night and need to confess? It's Charlie coming out to the listener. The priest is mentioned to show the family is very Christian, and of course Charlie would not admit to the priest he is gay because that would just confirm his eternal damnation that he is struggling with inside. |
