The song is about Maja's friend who overdosed and used to be a prostitute. She was a close friend and she wanted to write a song that was upbeat rather than the cliched slow, sappy songs about death.
She wasn't a romantic girlfriend. Just a friend. Maja is also not a lesbian... she used to label herself bisexual and had a longterm relationship with a woman for a few years but that ended a year and a half ago. She now says she'll never date a woman again...lol |

This song is a girl I know. Uses people, can't trust anyone so she works you until you're vulnerable to her, reassuring herself that she can trust you but in the process never intending to give in and be vulnerable herself -- everything is a test. Then when she has all the evidence she needs, she cuts you off. No one ever gets too close. Anyone unfortunate enough to see her unguarded is quickly discarded -- usually by worse means than people who never got too close and were just sex. |

I discovered this song at a time when it fit my life perfectly. I had fallen for someone else while in a 3-year relationship; someone who also was in a 2 year relationship. Being young and unable to control your feelings brought on confusion, despair, anger, resentment in all directions... and we were a pair of forgivers, trying to let go before it's too late. We both had just dealt with being cheated on by our girlfriends... and felt like continuing the affair would obviously be hurtful to our girlfriends and ruin our friendship. It ruined the friendship and scarred our relationships even though we are still with our respective girlfriends.
Aside from the personal meaning, the song is one of my favorites. Both well written lyrically and musically. An iconic song. |
