| Grateful Dead – Box Of Rain Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| To me the song means life is a dream and consciousness is a dream. The dream is fleeting and the box of rain is life on this earth. I think it also has to with multiple dimensions that we can reside in. | |

To me this song means: That every individual is on a “path” of their own as they go through life; and every individual must interpret life and its meaning for themselves. No choice. The chorus: Ripple in still water When there is no pebble tossed Nor wind to blow …means life’s meaning will come out of nowhere, in your mind and consciousness, in other words from the fountain not made by the hands of man. The songwriter is saying he/she would like to define life’s meaning and path, but he/she cannot, and it’s best you figure it out on your own, and in the end, that’s how it will happen anyhow…with the help of the fountain and the ripple without a cause. It’s like a parent or significant other squaring with you and saying that they love you, but…for the deep stuff…you have to figure it out for yourself. The song also says if someone thinks they have the answer or answers for others as a leader, well, they only have the answers for themselves. The song is about the deep personal stuff. I love the clarity of this song. |

| Grateful Dead – Uncle John's Band Lyrics | 14 years ago |

It’s always personal opinion of course. To me the song is about living a life with positive love towards your self and to others. The Vietnam references are a then current example of hate and ‘Goddamn, well I declare, have you seen the like?” is an expression of how ridiculous and surrealistic hate can manifest...with "cannonballs" meaning no distinction of time period or current context. I agree with the previous comment about “fire from ice” as an analogy of desire and hate, as taught in the Bible, because of the references to St. John.. Furthering that point, “Got some things to talk about beside the rising tide” means to me an invitation to a discussion about word of love as “Uncle John’s Band”, which I interpret as St John and Christianity, “playing to the tide”. The tide to me means death, an end to life or existence on this earth, and “Ain't no time to hate, barely time to wait,” means life is too short not to address the question of a life of love vis-a-vie a life of desire and hate. I think the song presumes the answer to the above question is always love, and therefore heaven as “home”. Great song. |
