I agree with most of this, but I believe he is just putting a tongue-in-cheek spin on what he was dealing with. everything was the opposite of what it should have been. I especially like the line "The bouncer is a Sumo wrestler cream-puff Caspar Milquetoast" My grandpa used to have a suitcase lined with Caspar Milquetoast comics on the inside. It just paints a vivid picture. I think we all percieve things differently when we're drunk, I think his perception is that of living in an oxymoronical landscape where everything is wrong but him. I really like this song when I feel like the world is broken and I am not. sometimes it helps to hear how foolish it really sounds. |

| Ray LaMontagne – Gossip In The Grain Lyrics | 13 years ago |

'Jackstraw' is an obsolete or insignificant person the 'Silly Sparrow' seems to have some relation to the chattering masses 'best make warm the eves' I think would mean get ready for what's to come. The callous old crow line seems to mean the enbittered person within a broked generation too callous to say or do anything about what's coming My disection could be wrong, but I think this song describes the general humanity that shrug off responsibility and respect and those that would rater chatter and gossip about the blame or events rather than prepare for what is to come. and even those old and wise enough to know what to do are a jaded and callous generation, too much so to act and poor be those who see what's coming and say nothing. |
