A Perfect Circle – The Outsider Lyrics 13 years ago
A lot of people think the song's about someone who commits suicide or fakes being suicidal for attention. That's not what this song is about. Trust me because I completely and wholly understand this song, and feel for Maynard. It's about someone very close to you (obviously a woman with words like "precious" and most likely a romantic interest of Maynard) who is highly self destructive. This song could've been written about my girlfriend/probably soon to be ex. There has been no greater pain, or frustration in my life, than dealing with and watching the woman I love try so desperately to destroy herself. Every line in this song has deep relevance to my relationship with her. He wants to understand why she does the things she does. (I understand why my gf is so self destructive so I suppose I have it better than Maynard. You can see the utter frustration in the lines; "what'll it take to get through to you precious, over this why do you want to throw it away like this such a mess" and most importantly "well I don't want to watch you." With that kind of love it's unbearable to watch someone do this to themselves. "What's your rush now everyone will have his day to die" simply strengthens my point. It's not that she's suicidal; it's that her reckless draw towards her annihilation will cause her early death, or loss of a true, good life. I promise you that's what this song is about; I've never been so sure of anything in my life. I expect my girlfriend and I don't have more than a few weeks left together; she's getting far worse, and I don't think I'll ever speak to her again. In fact I'm pretty sure if our relationship ends, she will be dead in a year. She was nearly killed before I met her, by her ex. Word of advice: Never fall in love with someone you are trying to save. You won't save them and you will get very very hurt in the process. Sorry Maynard, I won't watch my girl either.

I don't think it necessarily is only about someone who is suicidal, or pretending to be. I've watched a lot of people self destruct. Repeatedly choose to do things that wreck them. Alcoholism, abusive relationships, pushing people who care about them away. If you've seen people with such extreme self destructive tendencies, you'll know exactly what I'm talking about. It's horrible to watch from the outside, and that's why I think that's what this song is about to Maynard. "Why would I want to watch you?" I feel you Maynard.

Chevelle – Hats Off to the Bull Lyrics 13 years ago
Just a small touch up: that last "keep giving up" should be "keep giving all." He's definitely identifying with the bull in this song, so I feel it's not just about not giving up, but also has to do with feeling ganged up on by society. "While he's safe for the moment, guess what he's learning, he's never safe from the crowd." I think it's about how people treat each other badly, for no real reason, and to keep going and not worry about it.
