The White Stripes – Seven Nation Army Lyrics 12 years ago
I guess that makes me an even bigger nerd since I think of that when I hear this song, too, but I also know that her name is Daenerys Targeryen (not Khaleesi), that the name of the book series is A Song of Ice and Fire (not Game of Thrones), and that Wichita is a city in Kansas (not Westeros).

Tarja Turunen – In For A Kill Lyrics 13 years ago
This song always makes me think of James Bond. In the great tradition of linking opening sequences with songs from popular artists, there really ought to be a James Bond movie titled In For A Kill. Surely, I'm not the only one who can see this!!

Nightwish – Master Passion Greed Lyrics 13 years ago
I know this will come as a shock to many Nightwish fans, but not every song Tuomas writes is about Tarja or her dismissal.

Yes, once again for the people who's jaws dropped and eyes popped, not every song Tuomas writes is about Tarja or her dismissal.

Would you like me to type it a third time?

Ha ha! Your interpretations are amusing, though, so please don't stop your obsessive deviance from reason.

I do agree that this is the most aggressive song Nightwish has published to date. The lyrics are snarky. The music is hard hitting. Violent avarice radiates from every note.

The first thing I thought of when I heard this song? I thought of the scene from Legend that takes place in the Lord of Darkness' keep, you know, the one where he admits to his vile father that he is falling in love with Lili. His father says, "To make her one of us, charm her, woo her, change her spirit, hypnotise her, set her free, bring her to you!" Then Lili dances with the black gown, and in a flash, she goes from being a child of innocence in a white dress to being a queen of darkness in a goth dress. You know the one. I always think of that scene when I hear this song. But when I look at the lyrics and compare them to the movie, it's obvious that my reaction to this song is just as absurd as those who think it's about Tuomas' hatred for Tarja's husband.

Ha ha! So many improbable interpretations! I guess that puts us all on even ground, right? Only Tuomas knows the answer. I wonder if he has mentioned it in a magazine or radio interview?

Nightwish – Sahara Lyrics 13 years ago
Yes, I think it is! I always think of Scheherazade and Arabian Nights (One Thousand and One Nights in the original Arabic version) when I listen to this song. All of the lyrics fit. I often think of Lawrence of Arabia, too, but I'm not certain that it's as close of a fit. It has been far too many years since I last watched the movie, and I have yet to read the book.

Nightwish is one of the most literate bands I have encountered, and I think that's why I return to their music time and time again. People who are less familiar with classic literature, such as Arabian Nights (One Thousand and One Nights), are likely to miss the references in many of Tuomas Holopainan's lyrics.

I find it very difficult to believe that this song has anything to do with any kind of relationship between Tuomas and Tarja. I think too many Nightwish fans will read that into ANY song from Nightwish. It's nothing other than a projection of their own wishful thinking.

Nightwish – Turn Loose The Mermaids Lyrics 13 years ago
I often think about Hans Christian Anderson when I listen to this song. The only way to know for sure what this song is about, of course, is to ask Tuomas Holopainan himself, but I would not be surprised to learn that the mermaids are meant to be a reference to Anderson. Tuomas has revealed in numerous interviews that he is often inspired by children's literature and films. On the other hand, the lyrics do seem to indicate that this song may be about mortality. I can't think of a connection between the two other than the mermaid's sacrifice in the original The Little Mermaid by Hans Christian Anderson, and her death is the wrong sort of mortality. She is a young martyr, while this song appears to be about the end of a very long and full life. What do you think?
