I believe this song is making a statement about just girls in general. Lana takes you back to her youth and her high school experience, in my opinion. The statement about girls she is making is saying that girls will do anything for love. They all look for love and put it first before anything, it's an overwhelming need in so many girls. She even hints at the fact that girls put their boyfriends/love before their friends by saying "we don't stick together 'cause we put our love first" It also takes you back to the more fun times of being in high school. She reminisces.. "Sweet sixteen and we had arrived Baby's table dancin' at the local dive Cheerin our names in the pink spotlight Drinkin' cherry schnapps in the velvet night" My personal favorite part is when she mysteriously whispers.. "The prettiest in crowd that you had ever seen Ribbons in our hair and our eyes gleamed mean A freshmen generation of degenerate beauty queens And you know something?" They were the bad bitches in high school, but they were girls in high school. That says it all, really. Catty, vicious, sneaky, and of course, put love interests first before anything. Lana is telling you to not cry about it.. Listen to her! Just go out and have fun, and put your friends first before your boyfriends! And same for you guys! Put your friends first (: |

This song has extreme personal meaning to me. I remember my ex girlfriend listening to this in P.E class. That's when I first heard it. It's a beautiful song. It's a song about your youth and innocence with your friends and first love. She was best friends with, I am assuming 5 people. Which is weird, cause at one point I was best friends with 5 other people. We always used to go to each other's houses and laugh and play games and all that stuff that you do when you are just a teenager, and I was in love with one of my best friends, we dated for 3 years. Then, you all fall apart. It's sad to see, but it's for the best. But a piece of your heart will always be with them because they have something that no one else can have. Your youthful memories, your blind trust, and innocence. My favorite line is "So I go, and I will not be back here again, i'm gone as the day is fading on white houses. I lie, put my injuries all in the dust, and my heart is the five of us in white houses." Thankfully, all but one of us are all still really good friends, but one of us got lost in the midst of growing up way too fast. It's just a song about blindly trusting, and keeping the secrets of your best friends, falling in love for the first time, losing your virginity (symbolized as your innocence) "rush of blood and a little bit of pain... He's my first mistake." It's a beautiful song, the piano is lovely and her voice is great too. It will always take me back to the summer of 2010 when i thought I had the best friends I have ever had in my entire life. But life happens, and you drift apart. But you never forget 'em. <3 |
