Ray LaMontagne – Forever My Friend Lyrics 14 years ago
I am dedicating this song to a woman who I love very much but is nearing the end of her rope with all of the crap she has had to deal with for so long.

I love you unconditionally and I want you to know that I am here for you. You are forever my friend whether you want me in your life or not; you are a beautiful person inside and out and I want to help however I can.

Sorry gnugent, I posted my comment below before reading this one (I read about 20 comments before I felt I had to clarify, but in truth your clarification is much more comprehensive and compelling than mine.) Anyway, we completely agree. She pushed him away, he finally did go away, and when she lit into him for it, his response was, "Um, you're surprised?"

I guess the important thing, for me, is to realized that his lover's lack of trust led to a self-fulfilling prophecy. Whether she realized it or not, she basically dared him to actually do all of the things she suspected him of, and he finally did.

You guys are misinterpreting the key element of this song.

He was in love with this woman but isn't anymore. And the reason? She was jealous and suspicious of him all the time, and he finally got tired of not being believed.

And he acted the part of the coward: rather than walking away from her, he cheated on her and she found out. But the point of the song is, his betrayal was predicated by loving a woman who didn't know how to trust him.

Lesson learned?
