I think this is about a girlfriend who makes him feel way too comfortable, causing him to drop his guard too much and slip up. I also get the feeling that either the girl is fake in her complete acceptance of him (she might be trying to get something out of him--attention, money, etc) or he's just really paranoid that the situation is too good to be true. In coat-check, you give up what kept you warm outside, just as you let your guard down around people who love you. Neckrug: a rug is something people walk on, so I think that "cut my neckrug off" means "I covered up sensitive/emotional parts of me in the relationship," probably coming off as a jerk, which is why he would be blamed & scoffed at for being cold. Neckshirt: a shirt is something people use to convey a certain image of themselves, so "put my neckshirt on" could mean that he gives it all/tries to be the best & attractive to this girl, which could bring about feelings of being failed & conned because he still isn't sure she genuinely accepts & loves him. |

Well, I feel like I still don't fully understand a lot of these lyrics. but to me, this song is about artistic expression and dealing with the feedback from the media and the "parasites and lovers" that "scrape the meat from bones". I noticed a theme of feeling incomplete in this song and in others: "wicked hunter, three hooves, he still rode... you can climb there to your lofty perch" also comes up in Flash Delirium: "climbing a tree with a missing limb and not saving anyone" AND Someone's Missing is basically all over dat shiet. So yeah, anyway, there's the theme of artistic expression: "it can show you the flood that's trapped inside, this one's alive"-- to draw another comparison, is found in Siberian Breaks when he's singing about "the voice" etc. I think that this "voice" is personified in Metanoia, when he's singing about the woman in the bathroom-- "she'll help the rain come to a pour" and "the tail is breathing and she's listening". Then, "Lion's foot unearthing all the things i've seen but never truly understood: rotting wood from oceans that were never green crumbles beneath the canopy secretly" --Someone else commented that lion's foot is something used for snake bites, so as a healing agent, it's drawing up some feelings/ideas/abstractions from the narrators subconscious: things that could never be fully expressed because he never fully understood them, so they just waste away in "oceans that were never green"-- i'm thinking "green" means "new", so it's saying like, there's just an ancient ocean of unspoken ideas and feelings (collective unconscious?? jungian philosophy?? i'm probably over-analyzing this but it's interesting!) anyway i could keep talking about this but i think i got the basic points of my interpretation down |
