| Jimmy Buffett – Remittance Man Lyrics | 10 years ago |
| I think this song is a straight forward riff on Jimmy reading Mark Twain's "Following the Equator". There are several references in the book and I don't think Jimmy is making any deep philosophical statement here. I think he is simply doing what he does best. Weaving a great tale! I love it! FINS UP! | |

I love this song! It is by far my favorite....at the moment anyway. It's a great album! Something makes me feel this song is about dying. Knowing you are dying. The beginning of the after-life. I haven't put it all together yet, but it makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up when he goes into the "chant-like" passage at the end: It's it sunlight, it's it shadow It's the quiet, it's the word It's the beating heart It's the ocean it's the boys It's you, my sweet love (my sweet love) Oh, my love (oh my love) And the light, bright light And the light, bright light Bright light, bright light It's all around me It's all around me It's all around me It's like he's recalling the things he loves about the world, ending with lover (oh my love) and then the bright light (of death?) "it's all around me. There is a ton of references of seeing a bright light when you die. Walking "into the light", etc. Still working on the front part of the song and how it might tie in to dying. |

I think we can probably agree that this song is a pretty straight-forward plea from a horny teenage boy for sex. The imagery that really caught my attention was: "So I'll be your candle And I'll be your statuette...........". A little research and I was reading that girls sometimes use candles for more than illumination! lol Sounds like our young man wants to do a little more than just "go down"! |

| The Decemberists – Better Not Wake the Baby Lyrics | 10 years ago |
|
I'm thinking that this song was probably the product of Colin being warned about playing his music a little too loud while his wife was trying to see that their new baby, Milo, gets rest. So, with typical Meloy flair he let's loose with some really macabre imagery; "Use your skull like a cannonball" and "Gouge your eyes with a butter knife", for example. Maybe there was a little contention that spurred his imagination to violence? That's my take...........for now. |

I think he's singing "Three freaks in a Vanagon". You know, hippies in a VW microbus. They were branded Vanagons from '80 to '91. |

I guess I am happy to accept things at face value. Maybe I am naïve? This song struck me as a pretty straight forward ode (hymn) celebrating the beauty of a wooded area awakening after a long dormant winter. I know there is an urge to find a deeper, darker meaning, because it is a Colin Meloy composition. "yellow bonnets garland all the lawn" makes perfect sense to anyone who had dandelions all over the place! LOL The only line that kind of throws me off is, "with the war you shouldered all the night before". Maybe they had a big argument and "you were waking, day was breaking" speaks to a chance to put it behind them? Anyway, when my little trio gets to the bridge and we hit that "bring myself to wry-ee-ii-ee-ii-ii-ii-ii-ii-ite........." my eyes well up. What a gorgeous harmony!!! Thanks, Colin, for a gorgeous song full of beautiful imagery.....what ever you meant. |

| The Decemberists – Down by the Water Lyrics | 13 years ago |
| I didn't read every entry word-for-word, but it seems most of you are "working too hard" at this. Seems like a pretty straight forward narrative of a kid growing up in a "seaport" town. "See where all my follies lead" means he is STILL in his hometown. That is, what ever he tried to move on didn't work. In my experience the "main drag" is the main street. Depending on the configuratiopn of the water front, that "main drag" may right right along the water front, as it does in many cities! "Pretty little patter" is a reference to the accent, or dialect, of the region. The lash-flashing Leda is the water-front hooker. Not at all unusual! Just a peppy piece of fiction. Don't work so hard! Oh, and Colin is NOT from Seattle! He's from Helena Mt. | |

New Thoughts: I listened very, very carefully and, despite what is printed in the CD's liner lyrics, Colin never says, "I'll just be mine tonight." He merely says, "Just be mine tonight." I interpret that minor change to mean that the singer is "accepting" the infidelity and still "wants" her anyway. Also, if you listen very carefully to the very end (turn it up!) you will hear the vocals trail off, almost into a mutter, as if resigning himself to the fact that he is (madly?) in love with an unfaithful woman, and he will be "happy" if "she'll just be his TONIGHT". Listen again |

My overall impression is the same as laughingandgrief's. I listen to a song and don't really try to dissect it, or psychoanalyze it right away. I like to let the feeling coalesce over time. I think it's about a guy tired of a cheating girlfriend. Much of it is fairly obvious. The tricky part may be: "Better kick it from your big brown eyes" Stop lying to me! "I hear it tightens up after you fall for the fifteenth try" She has gotten a reputation and will find it harder to pick up men. "The dollar shop shoppers broke the lock and they knocked you down." Being taken advantage of and not respceted in cheap affairs. "Better call the coppers if you want someone to puch you around." He is not going to react violently or angrily in response to finding out. All in all a pretty cool little song, and my fiddle player NAILS it!!!!! |

Does anyone REALLY KNOW the correct lyrics? My band does the song very well. It is really a fun song to play, but I feel like such an idiot mumbling "nonsense syllables! I have worked with a multiband equalizer to try to isolate the vocals and I get......"and the reaps and the rights and the wrongs.......nonsense! Sometimes Colin's faux accent is infuriating! SOMEBODY PLEASE HELP ME!!!!! |

Sorry Jason, but the lyrics that came with the CD read "cardinal"......a bird! I admit it's odd that he should put it IN the living room. Perhaps it was perched outside a window? Colin has quite the imagination! BTW: I am a musician and I LOVE emulating his full-throated delivery! |
