In 3 parts (paragraphs) , this song is about Suzanne, Jesus, and you: Suzanne is half crazy, innocent and vulnerable. You want to be with her because she seems gullible enough to trust you. You think that your mind has convinced her that you can be trusted. Suzanne appears to hear what she wants to hear from the background noise of the river (You’ve always been her lover). You feel you can spend the night with her and use her for your own pleasure. Jesus has been watching us for a long time and saw that only desperate people take notice. If life is good, there is no need to pay attention to God. When I am drowning with troubles, I see God. But then He says we are all ”lost at sea” sailors until freed by the sea (on the last day). Yet we want to travel with and trust Jesus because he has touched us somehow with his mind. That would be because he allowed himself to be broken through the pragmatic wisdom of his time by those who conspired and then succeeded in crucifying him high on a wooden cross. However, the foul wisdom of his time is also your wisdom, as in your abuse of Suzanne. Because of you, He would die and sink like a stone to the netherworld just so we could be saved by his Resurrection. This “suffering servant” image touches you and opens up your mind to consider maybe you should accept His sacrifice as meaningful so we can be among those freed by the sea when the sky opens up on the last day. That takes on more meaning when you think of him as watching us from that lonely wooden tower, the cross. By this thought, Jesus has touched you with his mind. Suzanne takes over here by taking your hand. You thought you were manipulating her, but now you are re-thinking the situation. She leads you to see the heroes of the world and it is not those well dressed. To find them, you have to look among the muck (seaweed being fertilized by the dead) for those who died with their boots on while giving unselfish service to others. The sun pours down its light on Suzanne as if she has found favor from on high. In the seaweed she also sees people needing love and she becomes a mirror so you can look and see if you measure up to what is needed. She has touched you with her mind and perhaps moved you toward perfection. |
