writing this in 2013, it's obvious to me that we'll never go back to the days when songs were written like this. props to aretha for immortalizing a positive message with her divine voice.. this is a call to action for all men to treat their women as their equals. and not just because that's how men "bag" women, or hold on to women, but because that's what women deserve. she's not saying anything about buying your woman fancy clothes or expensive jewelry, just pay her in love, affection, and respect. |

This song is ridiculously adorable! The song opens with these obvious insinuations, but it isn't until you reach the chorus that you discover that Ella has chosen to coyly refer to "it" as falling in love. So cute! I mean, when you place this song in the time in which it was written, of COURSE it was much too taboo to actually come right out and say what "it" is. But that vague ambiguity is what delivers the punch, isn't it?
Oh, and let's not forget Ella's AMAZING voice, which is just the icing on the cake. (I love that you can hear her smiling when she sings :) |

The only line that seriously stumps me in this whole song is the line where the singer asks himself "What does it mean to fake your death / To wake up tainted?" Someone please help me out with this one! Obviously the only way he can wake up after dying is if he faked his own death. So this faking, this LYING, this act of being phony, is what causes him to be tainted. But what does faking his own death mean symbolically within the context of this song? Backing out of the relationship for no good reason? Telling his partner he loves her when he's not really sure of it, which means no going back or essentially, the death of his denial of love? And being tainted for professing his love when he's not even really sure if he means it? Help!!! |
