Said The Whale – Holly, Ontario Lyrics 14 years ago
I interpreted this song to be about a young woman, inexperienced and new to the vagabond life, cutting off all ties to her friends and family. Said The Whale opens the song with "Holly far from home, first time on the road", suggesting that she has just recently left home and has not yet "broken the ice", per se. It is her "First time away from home", and as she "discommunicates", or stops talking to those from her past, she becomes acquainted with the unfamiliar feeling of being "For the first time truly alone". As Holly buries her cellular phone in the lake, she is finally burying her last concatenation to her history. She gets back into her automobile, and "Drives beside the lake for the first time in north Ontario". A beautiful song.
