| Nas – Drunk By Myself Lyrics | 13 years ago |
|
Just in case, to enlighten whoever interested about Rico act and the meaning of Nas's matching line..... Rico act his one of the most sweeping criminal law ever. It has been custom-made for the organized crime to gain convictions and imprisoning mafiosi. The enactment of Rico back in 1970 made prosecutor's jobs easier which helped to allay people's fears and concerns about then raising crime rates. The statute allows government to freeze defendant's asset at the time of indictment and major exceptions to general due process of law principles such as innocence presumption. Conviction doesn't requires to meet the common standard of guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. Once convicted, defendant faces onerous criminal penalties (there is a 20-years minimum). For the record, civil portion of the statute allows victims to file a civil suit and recover up to three times the damages they suffered. Over the years, the statute has metastasized from its original intent as the list of crimes under RICO extended. That list goes from murder to extortion or bribery. Nas asserts that policemen and prosecutors crave for individual who engage into RICO offenses cause it will most likely result in wins on court. Engaging certain actions such as robbery and extortion, ASSOCIATED INDIVIDUALS like Nasir's "stick up kids" throw themselves in the belly of the beast for good, assuming of course they get prosecuted for it. |

| Those “stick up kids” Nas previously mentionned didn’t realize they could be prosecuted under the “Rico” act, teaming up to commit racketeering. | |

Nas enlightens us about his depression episode. He reports his life is derailing in a big way as everything goes wrong simultaneously from difficulties holding up relationship with years-long fiancee Carmen to to his so called friends up in his entourage to his business move. Although he could fight it off, applying patch after patch on his failing life he rather not doing anything at all. To make matters worse he seeks refuge in alcohol as his thought patterns tends to fall into the "i ain't shit" routine. Depression, and to be more specific, conflicts between a nagging melancholy and glimpses of joy clinging too tightly in one's memory, between the discover of the absurd and the call of happiness, between paranoia and lucidity is sometimes such a torture that one can consider it's better to hang oneself at once. Nas goes for a journey heading to melancholy and joy by turns. To hijack Dostoevsky's formula, he even contemplates such depths of both melancholy and joy at the same moment that sometimes it really seems that he is within a hair's-breadth of being turned upside down and commit suicide. One really has to have been there before to understand though! |

| Drake – Take Care Lyrics | 13 years ago |
|
The three first bars of Drake's second verse refers to leslie Gore's "it's my party (i'll cry if i want to" and he actually sings it along like she did back then in the sixties or like Fabolous recently did it. The whole point is about the fact his fiesta doesn't goes like he planned it in the first place cause shorty is playing games. She feels for him and yet she acts like she doesn't when her girls ask her whether she have a crush on him or not. For the record Leslie Gore's boyfriend walked away from her and put her on blast during her birthday party which is why she actually went nuts..... |

| Ghostface Killah – All That I Got Is You Lyrics | 13 years ago |
| Definitly a TEAR-JERKING jam but one of the greatest HIP-HOP songs of all time IMO. | |
| Vanessa Carlton – A Thousand Miles Lyrics | 13 years ago |
|
It refers to time leap i.e the ability to travel through time after falling from a height just like agent "J" (Will Smith) does in MIB#3. Vanessa lets the one who broke her heart know that she would definitely leap through time if it wasn't no science-fiction, she actually goes forth ensuring him that she would walk a thousand miles just to see him. Funny how she justifies her time leap comment with a down-to-earth statement by the way...... |

| Kate Miller-Heidke – The Last Day on Earth Lyrics | 13 years ago |
|
Well, this one here is an amazing song even though it's quite a tear-jerking one. One can tell it refers to a specific way of dealing with loved ones loss, whoever they are and Kate Miller-Heidke depicts a pretty grim picture actually. Kate sings that lost one lives in her memory for ever but she also rejects letting go like John Cobb (Leonardo Dicaprio) did with his wife (Marion Cotillard) in Christopher Nolan's "Inception" Denial is so intense that she kinda fast forward it all to the end of the world in her dreams just to have a chance to see he (or she) again. She fantasizes about it; it starts with the world reeling and rocking in the first verse and then it goes forth with her up close the lost one between the "dust and the debris" in the second verse and ends with her experimenting true joy as he (or she) wrap her around with his loving arms and vowing this moment could last forever This is the TRUE MEANING of this song even though mentioned a miscarriage on TV shows and newspapers, not to mention that miscarriage theory doesn't makes sense at all with this song's lyrics anyway. Let's hold it for certain, she would normally hit us with new born baby-related lyrics whereas she doesn't: - a new born doesn't hug his mother - a new born can't hold a conversation.... In my opinion that miscarriage thing was brought in the mix in the making of the video shoot.. |

| Joan Osborne – One Of Us Lyrics | 13 years ago |
|
For some reason felt in love with this song since i heard it back then which is quite amazing since i used to listen only hip hop music. As for the song's meaning, the intro sums it all up nicely: "One of these nights at about twelve o'clock this whole earth's gonna reel and rock... things thay'll tremble and cry for pain for the Lord's gonna come in his heavenly airplane" This being said, Joan Osbourne changes her mind wondering what if the "Lord" was already there and asks several questions related to that theory. Osbourne challenges us to grab a hold and ride with her throughout this utopia. Doing so she doesn't deny God 's "supreme being" status (she sings "yeah, God is great") but questions atheist (would they believe?)and believers (would they change their ways?).... Allow me to dwell on this God issue, the intro obviously refers to the "Second Coming" whereas the rest of the song deals about God becoming flesh and dwelling among us. For some reasons it reminds me of Ivan Karamazov's "Grand Inquisitor" so called "poem" told in Dostoievki's "The Brothers Karamazov" novel (1880). Ivan's tale deals about Jesus coming back to earth in spain during those inquisition days (16th century), performing a couple miracles and finally drawing local cardinal bishop's hate upon Him..... No matter what, this song is a christian song evn though it's quite multi-layered. Period. |

| Nas – Hate Me Now Lyrics | 13 years ago |
|
First of all to each his own and i can't really figure out a punk aficionado reviewing and adding comments on rap pages. This being said, NaS is like on another level and that's why he is MY all time favourite. Don't get it twisted i can bump a Jay-z or a Drake album and vibe and dance to it but Nas is the only one i look up to, support him since "It Was Written" dayz right after hearing "The message" first bars. As far as the "Hate Me Now" video contreversy you may understand that he is just drawing a parallel between him and "Jesus" and not saying he is Jesus but, being religious myself, i admit this part of the video is quite confusing. Hate it or love it Nas is definitly the most hated on rap performer of all time due to his "Illmatic" album status. For instance, Biggie got a free pass for his radio-friendly "Ready To Die" release and so did many others but when it comes to Nas everybody is bugging. To put it in a nutshell, "Hate Me Now"'s concept is just accurate, including the contreversial depiction. Damn it rememinds me attending some Nas show in Paris, it's like i can clearly picture him saying "middle fingers up" as "Hate me now"'s beat starts bumping |

| Nas – The Message Lyrics | 13 years ago |
|
Second verse is a fictional tale like some one previously said. Nas's character chills in some jeep waiting for his fall guy to give in some drug money. For some reason it reminds me of If "I Ruled The World" video intro which depicts Nas and Jungle in a car smoking weed until a cop knock on the car's tinted window.... Nas notices some dude is drawing his guys's attention, fronnting and bragging about his Rikers-Island bid and especially the way he use to regulate ever other inmates. Nas gets mad, grab his handgun, pop out of his car and head toward him..... Nas points his weapon at him and removes the safety catch with the clanking noise to match - hence the "clanked him" line! - from there he peeps back at his guys and urges em to proceed to the awaited deposit - cause it's the drug money withdrawal day - Dude takes advantage of nas being distracted and shoot his leg, Nas shoot him back by instinct and then next thing he knows it turns into a shoutout. He gets down low to protect himself from being hit again. After the storm, he gives his gun to one of his fall guy in order to wait for fir aid. They take him to the hospital, he gets those emergency care and leave the hospital right on. His pals - the one who was with him in the jeep - lets him know that shots came from an unusual car -brown datsun - and from that point Nas gets it all together and retaliates. To put it in a nutshell, the message here is don't fuck with me - nas - quite simple isn't it. But Nas sums it up nicely with his "SO, when i rhyme it's sincerely yours" line which is a polite way to end a letter. When Nas rhyme it's the end for the other rap performers..... |

| The Notorious B.I.G. – Juicy Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
I totally cosign with that sammySam dude. This is all about Biggie rise and falls since he keeps going back and forth between his rough days and his brand new lavish lifestyle. Quote someone saying, Biggie referred to 1993 World Trade Center attack with his "Time to get paid blow up like the world trade" punchline but as far as i am concerned he is referring to international trades which went through an agressive expansion from 1980's fall. Was too young back then but international trades were necessarily all up in the news back in 1994 first months when Biggie wrote his song "juicy" - he reporteadly wrote all "ready to die" radio-friendly song in 1994 - cause of the Marakech agreements and the World Trade Organization project. International trades litterally blown up whereas the World Trade Center suffered a serious attack but wasn't blown out of it..... This being said how do you guys interpret the end of the hook when those Total girls sing "cause you're the only one, i'll give you good and plenty". I know they kinda shout out to Mtume's tune but i feel like it doesn't fit to the rest of the hook. I mean it makes sense on "juicy fruit" cause shorty sings about how special her man his saying "you're the only love/that gives me good and plenty" and - until someone proves me the opposite - it doesn't in Biggie's "Juicy" Still a great tune though, east coast rap saviour. |
