"Dave is the only one who did drugs" Not necessarily true.

I don't think that this one's about drugs, but that's just me :)

Depeche Mode – It Doesn't Matter Two Lyrics 13 years ago
Honestly, all the stuff you have mentioned is absolutely correct. The lines you are referring to could be interpretted in any of the ways that you mentioned, it's just about what the song means to you on a personal level!
I have my own interpretations, but really the only one who knows what these lyrics truly mean is Martin Gore! ;)

a) "As I lay here with you" - Lay can of course just mean to lie down, here I think it will probably mean to have sex, or maybe just after sex(the song It Doesn't Matter also by Depeche Mode has the line "lay down next to me and please don't move a muscle" sounds very similar and for me it has the same meaning)

b) "We talk of love and trust, That doesn't matter." - I have always though this relates to both "love and trust" and the "talk", as neither matter. It reminds me of the things we say when we want to have our wicked ways with somebody, when you are attracted to someone and want to have sex with them you sometimes say things that you don't actually mean, you tell them you love them and try to make them trust you so that they will fall for you.

c) "The shame lies with us" - Later in the song Martin says "though it feels good now, I know it's only for now" which makes me think that something about what he has done is wrong, maybe immoral, maybe he has made a mistake that will hurt the person he has been sleeping with or will effect him in the future. I think that he is ashamed with himself for what he has done.

like I said this is only my interpretation! This song could mean something completely different to you. I think what you said about your own interpretation of the song is very close to mine though. I also think it's about sex between people who are perhaps young. I also think that maybe the guy in this song is using the girl he is with, the sex is meaningless to him. Martin writes many songs that talk about sex in a very emotional and sometimes negative way, like World Full Of Nothing and Somebody, something that I don't think is done very often and when it is, it isn't done as effectively as DM songs are. He's very underrated as a songwriter...

Depeche Mode – Pleasure, Little Treasure Lyrics 13 years ago
I've always thought this song as a bit of a sequal to Black Celebration... about life being mundane and bleak so we find happiness and relief in the little things around us. With Black Celebration it was like knowing you've made it and also companionship are what make everything okay. But with this song it's clearly sexual! It's also nowhere near as dark, BC is deep and very VERY dark... this is dancy and sexy. I think that BC was personal, like 'I can't be bothered with life and I need something to live for' whereas Pleasure is more like 'you can't be bothered with life, so I'll show you something to live for.' I can see a similar sort of sequel-esque thing with a few DM songs (Shake The Disease and Stories Of Old) but basically I think that like so many other songs 'I Want You Now' 'Fly on The Windscreen' ETC this could very well be another 'I love you/We're all gonna die/Life is shit... I know, let's have sex?' number. Mr Gore is good at writing these... If Pleasure Little Treasure and I Want You Now did not get him laid like 7892653+ times there is something wrong with the world!

Depeche Mode – Clean Lyrics 13 years ago
a lot of DM songs are fairly ambiguous and pretty much open for interpretation - as all good songs should be! It's fairly easy to see why a lot of people hear the words to Clean and just automatically think drugs, but to me the words stand out as someone who is changing... becoming a better person.. but the somtimes makes me think that although he claims to have changed and feel better for it, 'sometimes' he can feel himself slipping back into his old ways, and occasionally he misses the way he used to be. I suppose that's quite similar to all the relationship/repentance interpretations... but I can't see the drugs in this song, and I'm pretty sure that's not what MLG had in mind, the heavy drinking/drug taking stage was post-Violator and they weren't 'Clean' until Ultra! ;)

Joy Division – Love Will Tear Us Apart Lyrics 14 years ago
Ian Curtis didn't take heroin. Everyone has their own interpretations of songs and if to you it's about drugs then that's your personal opinion then who is anyone to say it's wrong? But don't post stuff about the singer when you clearly know nothing about them.
