| Guided by Voices – Tractor Rape Chain (Clean It Up) Lyrics | 13 years ago |
|
I agree that it is about a failing relationship, but the details, as I interpret them, are different. The narrator is doubting his/her partner in the first verse: "Something that you have said or implied makes me doubt you" This is happening more and more frequently: "Why is it every time I think about you" I think the 2nd verse relates to the first. The singer's doubt of his/her partner might just be paranoia but the ghost (probably of an ex that was unfaithful or untrustable) is something that the singer believes in anyway and wishes that he/she could get rid of, but needs the help of the other to disprove it's existence. |

| Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – Idiot Prayer Lyrics | 13 years ago |
| I think it fits well with The Boatman's Call. People suck. Relationships hurt. He killed her. Maybe she deserved it. Maybe she didn't but she'll forgive him. What will his fate be after he dies? | |

| Fucked Up – what could have been Lyrics | 13 years ago |

Man takes a seat by himself. Stares at a plate. Life has taken a bite. I wanna growl or maybe just cry. Wanna speak but I don't even try. So we go on mundane. What makes things this way? I'll leave you alone as you left me. But you're right I should have kept to my own. There's a woman I see every week. I think of life if I could only speak. We don't say a word. Lovers never meet. I have to live in my sleep. So we go on through our days. What makes us live this way? Someday it was you left me claiming I should be on my own. What could've been (x4) Working in a cage every day What makes us live this way? I'm just a simple man who has lost his way. hoping I'll get the wild life some day. (just like ?) (just like ?) It's ugly. Working in a cage every day What makes us live this way? I'm just a grown man who has lost his way. Hoping I'll get a real life one day. One day. What could have been. (x4) Shrinking through life never making a sound. Who will hear us when we hit the ground? I feel so bad you hit the floor. Now I don't wanna live this live no more. |

| EMA – Red Star Lyrics | 13 years ago |
| I agree with your analysis, and also think this is a brilliant song. I think its one of the better on the album and its extremely important for the album as the closer. She finally comes to a reasonable conclusion that: 'if you won't love me, someone will' Its one of the only positive or self-enforcing lyrics of the album. | |
| EMA – Milkman Lyrics | 13 years ago |
| Clearly all about sex. Its not even that cryptic. | |
| EMA – Grey Ship Lyrics | 13 years ago |
| Just some observations as I can't interpret this. This song is beautiful but leaves so much open to question. Everyone mentioned is a woman. Most related to her. They are going on a ship to heaven. | |
| EMA – Marked Lyrics | 13 years ago |

@ astralcompanion: I agree with you. No doubt its about heroin with parallels to an abusive relationship. I think this is the new "Hurt" for me. |

| The National – Available Lyrics | 13 years ago |
| I'm not convinced that he doesn't care. I mean he fucking screams like none other at the end of the song. I think he wants her to be more confident. He wants more from her. He doesn't think what he's doing is right and he wants her to stand up for herself instead of liquoring him up and dressing him down. He wants to feel like shit too. Its ironic that sometimes in relationships, you don't want the other person to give you everything, just to see you for what you really are. | |
| Fucked Up – Hidden World Lyrics | 13 years ago |
|
This song is amazing. The intro conveys an amazing amount of energy. I imagine removing veils in an attempt to access the 'hidden world.' The rest of the song progression is also amazing, ending with simple whistling. I believe it is about access to an internal world where various paradoxes seemingly exist..."look close and find a place where small is large"... Behind all the veils and bullshit, seen maybe with only a 'third eye' is a great place, maybe a bit of heaven on earth, full of bliss and peace. |

| Fucked Up – David Comes To Life Lyrics | 13 years ago |
|
I think the great thing about this song is that it can apply to so many things... generally: the quest for god / higher understanding, but that can manifest itself as drugs use, religion, relationships, blowing up a factory that makes lightbulbs (LOL) etc.. anything used with the expectation of "jumping the line" David is a flawed character.. just like the rest of us. | St. Vincent – Dilettante Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
One of my favorites on the album. I don't get the reference to Elijah. Biblical? My interpretation is that Elijah is a dilettante in his interest in the singer. She wants him to show interest in him. "while you are sleeping my mind goes creaking down the hall" He's busy doing other things "What's so pressing, you can't undress me anyway?". |

| Fucked Up – The Other Shoe Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
Anyone get the point of "the other shoe" part? It first occurs at the end of the last song and reappears at the beginning of this one. I think the love, etc. is likened to the supposed plot of blowing up the factory. Both are about to fall. This song confuses me. |

| Fucked Up – Under My Nose Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
Lovers having a great time, with the "sense of impending doom." This is only the third song, gotta be more bad shit that happens. How often do you hear someone rhyme with a philosopher... Thats the coolest part for me. Hume was a known for expressing the view that sensations and feelings are the root of everything for humans. There is no giant thing called "Reason" to follow. In this case, I think the lovers would dislike followers of Hume because they would question the reality of their "Love." |

| Fucked Up – Queen of Hearts Lyrics | 14 years ago |

This song is easy. Factory worker bored with his work. Stuck. Falls in love with a left-wing advocate handing out pamphlets. I like the lyrics.. "boot off my throat, life is returning".. Seems familiar feeling to falling in love again. |

| Fucked Up – David Comes To Life Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| I hear it more as a dream and less about drugs or suicide, though both of those could be involved... Mostly basing this off of the female vocals singing softly: "David its time to get up." Could be awakening from a dream or from a suicide attempt or drug induced coma though I suppose. | |
| Fucked Up – Magic Word Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| I think the lead singer at least is straight edge, but it a sure sounds like its about drugs. | |
