The Shins – Sea Legs Lyrics 11 years ago
Maybe this is wrong, but I see this as that moment when you first start falling for someone. Like maybe this is about the first night they met. Of all the hearts under the sun, we found one another and this awesome light appeared. Girl if you're a seascape, I'm a listing boat - he's fascinated by her. for the thing carries every hope - this is what really makes me think it's about a new flame because he's got high hopes for them. I haven't really analyzed every metaphor like I do with so many of their songs, just because I don't take as much away from these lyrics, but I will say the next few bits are just about the transition. When you're falling fast for someone, there's no 'time to start a protocol' but I don't want this to sound like he's in love per se. "the chill aspire" I think that's just to point out this is new and exciting, not serious. "I routed a labrynth to your lap" to me that's a clever way of saying he charmed his way into her pants. And then finally, the metaphor "sea legs" they don't yet have their balance or really fully know one another. they're still new, but they are off tonight. that feeling when you like someone more, and more quickly, than you were prepared for. the way that you feel around them. for some reason it also comes across quite physically to me. the surges of adrenaline and the sex and all that. that's to me, what this seems to be about.

Bruce Springsteen – Girls In Their Summer Clothes Lyrics 11 years ago
I think it's a lot simpler than I hold it to be. It's a generic song about loving a town and a season and the nostalgia one faces at the end of that. It's optimistic and I think that the note of 'girls in their summer clothes' is just an observation of something pretty, like a flower or sunset. I think that is evidenced in the music video, which features women and girls of all ages. That being said, I have always related this in an entirely different and fabricated way. As a pansexual, this song is to me, a bit melancholy. It has this specific chord change at that one "girls in their summer clothes" line, that just brings this dissatisfied, unquenched feeling. I think he just means they're physically passing by, but for me, it's that stinging feeling of watching beautiful women pass you by, as in give up, not give you a second thought. Admiring the beautiful women but finding out they're straight, or being too scared to approach them. Sort of feeling outcast in this beautiful small town, like as much as you love it, the good times are sort of coming to a longing, bittersweet end. Obviously that's not his intended meaning, but I would just love to see a theatrical performance about a lesbian, where she ended up singing this as a lament. Part of me wants to do a slower/more dramatic cover of this to convey that take on it.

St. Vincent – Landmines Lyrics 11 years ago
To me, this song is so poetic, which not all lyrics are. I want to break this down piece by piece into what it means to me.

I am walking dangerous, unknown paths just to know you.
It is hard for me to see clearly because you are lighting such a fire within me.

I am walking dangerous, unknown paths just to be able to feel you.
now this line is important and everyone has speculated it on here.
Under cover of night, I put a pearl in the ground.
To me this means a few things. Under cover of night indicates that she has done this in secret. She is not openly expressing it. Now firstly, isolated, to put a pearl in the ground, I see as taking something good and pure and 'planting' it (as someone else said) to me, that is like setting something in stone. But I also want to think of this in the context of the song. She is talking about walking through landmines, but she stops, when no one is around, to put a pearl in the ground. So in the midst of volatile, dangerous grounds, she is instead, placing beneath her, something beautiful and rare. I think what this piece means is that she, secretly, deep down, feels safe with this person. She is putting her whole trust in them.

next is basic
Where'd you go?
Not so far
Please don't go
Not too far
Where'd you go?
Not so far
Please don't go
Not so far

I found your ring with the feather on
One arm in and one arm gone
Save this ring let's bring Paris right here
I'm not entirely sure about this part. So I'm just going to go with what the imagery leans me towards. It sort of sounds like one of the landmines exploded. But seeing how she found it, it makes me think maybe it exploded previously, with someone else. She found a piece of them that has a feather with a ring on, which sort of makes me think of a wavering, unsure feeling about marriage. one arm in one arm gone because they like the idea and they want it but they have already lost one arm to it. maybe they previously found someone they wanted to marry, but that exploded and left them scarred. She is saying save the ring, let's bring Paris right here. Rather than having some extravagant marriage, you hang onto that ring for now, and rather than some wild honeymoon in Paris, let's bring all that romance and excitement into what we already have. The ring is important to me as this album is called Marry Me.

Oh, my dear
My love
Do you know, my love? do you know?

I'm crawling through landmines
Just to feel where you've been (same again)
She is changed by this relationship, she's trying to protect herself, but she is forever affected by this person.

I'm crawling through landmines
I know cause I planted them - this part is interesting. I think it means that the landmines only exist because she has let herself be vulnerable which she sort of says next
Under cover of night I put my heart in the ground - in secret, she surrendered her heart to this path.

Where'd you go?
Not so far
Please don't go
Not too far
Where'd you go?
Not so far
Please don't go
Not so far

I found your glove with the leather torn
Five fingers that I'm counting on
Smoke signals to call you right here - Again could refer to a past relationship or even something the two of them have been through. smoke signals to call you right here. I can't tell if this is intimate and romantic or if she's saying that she is so desperate to get this person closer to her that she is setting off 'fake landmines' or smoke signals which could mean idk, false issues. Crying out. not sure? Could just be a sweet sentiment too.

Oh, my love
My dear
my love

This song is so gorgeous and I think a very vulnerable, revealing moment in a relationship.

Lorde – Buzzcut Season Lyrics 11 years ago
I think 21Minute nailed it I just wanted to add a bit.
I think it may go a bit deeper than just 'enjoying the summer' however I do think that that is the main point. A lot of Lorde's stuff is very heavy for her age and I think that there is a certain emphasis in this song that needs to be recognized, on the heaviness she deals with. I don't know always what it is that she deals with be it depression or maybe losing a person - the cancer idea is good, though I'm not sold on it. Whatever it is, she has someone she confides in who seems to from the sound of it, share the same problems. Her songs are often addressed to this person.
But the point of the song, I do still agree is on creating your own illusion and sort of slipping into it. There's this longing to stop time. Definitely about enjoying summer.

I'm actually surprised no one has commented on how strong the first verse is. Those are like....some seriously kick ass lyrics. The wordplay is very smart. I think it is a pretty obvious metaphor, though, for saying that something really crappy happened to this person, but they were able to laugh through it. Their hair burnt off, but so what, it's buzz cut season anyway. How cool is that?

I really really like this song.

The Neighbourhood – Sweater Weather Lyrics 12 years ago
I think that this song is about being unprepared to love another person because of the heavy depression weighting down on ones own life. He says that inside it is warm but outside it's ice cold. The depression is so overbearing that it is too cold to love another.

Use the sleeves of my sweater, let's have an adventure. He's using the pieces of strength he has to enjoy his time with her.

Head in the ground but gravity centered means that she takes him away but he still has those problems.

She knows what I'm thinkin about. And what I'm thinkin about is one love one house one love two mouths no shirt no blouse. He wants a love that is committed and means something between only the two of them and includes a sexual component but

Nothing that I really wanna tell you about no. He doesn't want her to know how pained he is when she isn't there to take it away.

I think this is a very sexy song and that references suggest that their sexual chemistry is wonderful but that he is afraid to put anything more down because of his own personal issues. Just my thought. I can definitely relate to this.

Lorde – 400 Lux Lyrics 12 years ago
Her actual quote is, "i think somewhere along the line also there was a misquote where people got the impression i thought writing about love was shameful. i don’t! i just haven’t found a way of doing it which is powerful and innovative, which is why i don’t. " So I think that it is possible that at this point she did find a way she enjoyed expressing feelings for a guy. And it also helps that even liking this guy is not the entire point of the song, if that is what she's getting at. It's about more than that.

I think that Lorde likes using metaphors and wordplay to sort of make her true meaning a little bit cryptic, though not entirely hidden. But still, with this song, I get the vibe that she likes this guy. However I totally agree with everything you said about her friend. I never saw that stuff, but taking your word for it, it sounds like it's totally about him. But I can't help thinking that with all said in the song, there is something about this guy that makes her feel alive, because she is "hollow like the bottles we drain" yet "pulses can drive from here."
And the fact that there is drinking implied sort of gives me two ideas. One, she's on that sort of drunk love high. She does repeatedly say, "I like you." You know when you've been drinking and you just have this excitement for whomever you're with? Or two that it is a physical relationship because obviously, when you're engaging in physical activity with another person, your pulse is up. If she's sneaking out the window at night drinking, good chance they're also hooking up.

I agree with the commenter down there that she is referencing her song White Teeth Teens. And the main takeaway from there is that even awesome, original Lorde who is one of a kind, does sometimes daydream about being one of those normal, pretty, "perfect" teenage girls or of coming off a certain way.

I think this song sort of addresses a lot of things. Wanting to come off perfectly, admiring the beautiful suburbs- something that has never been close to your home, the thrill of sneaking out and drinking, the excitement of being in a car at night with someone you like. As for the title, someone referenced the meaning of a lux, and it's actually quite simple. 400 lux refers to a certain amount of light over a given area. Coincidentally, a sunrise or sunset is equal to 400 lux. This is probably a play on words referencing the way that she feels and also the fact that they're probably out until sunrise, or something along those lines.

Anyway just my thoughts!

Macklemore – Thrift Shop Lyrics 13 years ago
If you're actually truly looking for the meaning to this song, you're reading way too much into it. It's basically a joke. Making light of being broke and trying to fit in with kids who buy super expensive nice clothes. That is literally all there is to it.

Counting Crows – Mr. Jones Lyrics 13 years ago
If you dig around you can probably find an interview where Adam talks about this. But basically, the song is pretty straightforward and isn't necessarily supposed to have any hidden meanings. It is in fact about him and a former bandmate going out to a bar for drinks to watch (former bandmate) Marty Jones' dad play spanish guitar. Adam spots a blonde and thinks she's hot and Marty spots a brunette who, as she dances and lets out her personality, becomes more and more attractive. They're too shy to go talk to the girls, based on what he said in real life, but I think that Adam looks up to Marty for his solidity because throughout the song "Mr Jones" (Marty) gets the girls' attention. But throughout the song, while they're out, they sort of daydream about how much easier it'd be to get girls if they were famous rockstars. And in fact this gets deeper and more out of hand as the song goes. As cheerful and fun as it is, this song is very very bittersweet. Because he sort of confesses his sadness and loneliness and sort of says that fame will just solve all of those problems, knowing full well that it won't. We aren't meant to take that literally, but as a sort of pretty much rather than dealing with the root of his problems, the singer is looking forward to becoming a rockstar and just wishing and thinking that it would totally fix everything. But the saddest part about this is his self doubt throughout the entire song. "believe in me, cause I don't believe in anything and I wanna be someone to believe." also referring to their plans involving fame as "fairy tales." It's sort of just a starry eyed daydream is what the entire song is. A night out, smashed, wishing they were rockstars, but he just slips it in so perfectly how sad he is and how desperately he wants to believe that not only can his dreams come true but that they can cure that sadness. And all the while we know it's not actually going to solve all of his problems but boy is it fun to think that way. Very bittersweet, especially if you're going through something similar. But Adam intends this to be relatable to everyone, not just hopeful rockstars. But whatever it is in your future that seems so out of reach or so like the "end" goal, like it would solve everything.
