This is a song that plays with some concepts in our culture, such as the claim we are judged by what we build, not by where we are. The song starts out hinting that it is going to debunk an American myth. It may not be all that American, south of the border you might make a pilgrimage to see the Liberty Bell or the Lincoln Memorial and north of the border it could be Quebec City or Kingston and say "here is where we started, this is who we are". The song is saying that we have gone too far in our building (rusted ferris wheels, swollen city breeze, garbage bag trees) that we must instead take our spirit from the places that overwhelm the human perspective, places like the great plains. The video supports this by having the band play in natural, desolate settings and symbols of man made things (cars, statues of horses, phone booths) dangle in strange ways from above. They are shown to be out of place. That the windswept plains are what living in our times SHOULD be about. Ry Cooder has devoted his extensive musical career in search of the authentic, the neglected and the heartfelt. Anyone would be truly blessed to have him sing their eulogy, but he is also a reference to taking the singer away from the artificial... |

This song always reminds me of "Into the WIld" the story of Christopher McCandless. When the chorus sings of grass being green, winters mild and then hunger passing, I think of his journey to Alaska. I wonder if that was the intention of the writers or am I dreaming? |
