Actually, by the lead singer himself, this entire album is a metaphor for an emotionally abusive relationship. This album isn't about him falling in love with a girl at a hospital who has cancer, but is entirely a metaphor for the abusive relationship, using the happenings of a cancer patient as metaphors for the abusive aspects of the relationship. Genius lyrics gives some great interpretation behind the songs. Other songs like "Two" show the elements of the actual relationship outside of the hospital concept. |

My first interpretive thoughts on this was that she was in a relationship, obviously, and was selfish throughout. Only thinking about herself, what she wanted out of the relationship, what could benefit her, but ignoring what mattered to her lover. Perhaps she was using him. She wanted him regardless of whether it was right for him to be with her because of her selfish nature. She suffocated the relationship because of her own desires. Not only did she ignore what negative consequences this could evoke upon her lover, but she also failed to see that this would bring negative consequences upon herself, ultimately: extreme guilt.
Just my thoughts! Daughter is a great band. I love the lyrics. |

I definitely agree with missxt. However, I don't think Kimbre's part is the new girlfriend. I think it was the one who Gotye was originally with. He's singing the song to her and she's retorting. she's telling him how she remembers all the times he screwed her over and led herself to believe that it wasn't that bad and she could fix (But had me believing it was always something that I'd done). But she's refusing to live that way. She's not going to read into what Gotye is saying to her about cutting him off and ignoring him. Because when the break up ended he told her he could get over it and they she wouldn't catch him "hung up on somebody that he used to know." Meaning her. She's not going to let him bring her down because she cut him off. He said that he could get over it and clearly he isn't getting over it. |
