OneRepublic – Counting Stars Lyrics 7 years ago
My personal Mormon opinion coming up.
Thesis: this song fits well with the Joseph Smith story.
Evidence: The music video is about a church/congregation of some kind, and he references the "no more counting dollars, we'll be counting stars." Kind of like how there are a lot of churches who preach only for money.
From the song:
"In my faces flashing signs
Seek it out and ye shall find"
A scripture from Matthew 7:7, often referenced in connection with J. Smith's search for enlightenment.

"The old, but I'm not that old
Young, but I'm not that bold"
J. Smith was just a young boy when he had the First Vision.

"And I don't think the world is sold
I'm just doing what we're told"
He didn't know better than to just go to church, because that's just what you did, you went to whatever church could get your attention and convince you to stay.

"I, feel something so right
Doing the wrong thing
I, feel something so wrong
But doing the right thing"
Fits in with how he felt the influence of Satan when he was "doing the right thing" trying to pray and be saved.

"I could lie, could lie, could lie"
He could have lied, and dismissed the whole thing, but in his own words, " I had seen a vision; I knew it, and I knew that God knew it, and I could not deny it."

"Everything that kills me makes me feel alive"
Through his martyrdom he was, in a way, set free, or made more alive by not being constrained by mortality, or persecution.

I dunno, just some thoughts.

Panic! at the Disco – This Is Gospel Lyrics 7 years ago
From the lyrics and the music video I feel like this song is about death, and religious views on it. Its the deceased calling out "If you love me, Let me go."
When he says "These words are knives that often leave scars" he could be referencing that the words of solace, i.e. "Don't worry, you'll see them again," or "They're no dead, just sleeping," hence he says, "Locked away in permanent slumber."
Second verse could refer to corruption among churches, "Confessing their apostasies, led away by imperfect imposters."
In general I feel that it's about some unintentional consequences that the verbally communicated sentiments about life after death. Some people may not reach closure and may never "let go," which can stunt their lives in other ways

The Cat Empire – No Longer There Lyrics 12 years ago
Overall, I get the impression that it's asking, What is your legacy? When everything that you've worked to build throughout your life is gone, When all your corporations and businesses have fallen, and your crops and fields burned, what have you contributed to society?

More specifically, it's saying that even though you want to be told that everything is alright, and that you've done so much for the world, you need to ask yourself, what have I really left behind?
