I've always felt that the lyrics in the verses suggest that being ambitious and achieving things iis overrated and not as important as finding real love. I think that there are three key words missing in the lyrics but implied in the sentiment: Those words are "By someone else..." So in my mind what John Lennon is trying to say is: There's nothing you can do that can't be done...by someone else. Nothing you can sing that can't be sung...by someone else. There's nothing you can make that can't be made...by someone else. No one you can save that can't be saved...by someone else. There's nothing you can know that isn't known...by someone else. Nothing you can show that can't be shown...by someone else. But what you can put your efforts into is: Learning how "to be you in time"...accept where "you're meant to be...and embrace the notion that "all you need is love." |
