Of course it could be the classic subject of poetry, i.e. the Music Muse, the woman behind all music. As I read it as poetry, it seems to fit... and at the close.... "And the sorrow, I see her face is lined" (because pure music has been perverted and made uglier... with no harmony or beauty) She's no longer blind, she's just hard to find. (her innocence is gone... as is the song writer's, making it harder for both of them to enjoy the free flow of being together and making something beautiful.) Dang... I should get an A on this ! |

This is good poetry, and as poetry it has multiple levels of meanings. You can be sure that Don desired to evoke many interpretations on several levels ... 1. The events and feelings related to the death of some pivotal artists. 2. What that may have meant to the changes in the music culture 3. What that may have meant to the generation most tuned into that music 4. What that may have meant for American society overall 5. What that may have meant for the spiritual health of America It is rich with many allusions that are fun to tease out, all of which could have many meanings, as he intended, and he would approve highly of the comments posted here. BTW, When in Ireland, I was drawn into a local pub by the bachelor party going on, where the guys were taking turns singing different songs a capella, each taking a turn at lead. I didn't know most of the songs, and could refuse my turn as lead until they came to American Pie. (They knew the lyrics better than I.) This song is one of the better American Ambassadors we have sent out into the world. Zudster |
