i heard somewhere that this song is about man and how corrupt he is, as the "king rat". it kinda goes with the music video, where man is put on the other end of the shitty deal. |

This song isn't about meth, nor is Styrofoam Boots. Isaac says himself that the only drugs he ever wrote about were pills, pot, and alcohol. While I can't say that I know what it's about, I can help narrow it down that much. Check out this interview with Brock where he says; it's really interesting. http://www.avclub.com/articles/modest-mouse,13862/ |

The line "The third planet is sure that they're being watched by an eye in the sky that can't be stopped and when you get to the promise land, you're gonna shake the eye's hand" is pretty obivious so I'm gonna look stupid saying but; The third planet(Earth) is sure that they're being watched by an eye in the sky that can't be stopped(We are sure God is watching us and can't be stopped) and when you get to the promise land(When you die and go to Heaven) you're gonna shake the eye's hand(You're going to meet God). |

| Modest Mouse – Cowboy Dan Lyrics

I think Cowboy Dan is a metaphor for America. "He's gonna start a war"(obvious). I also think that when he says "He hops in his pickup puts the pedal to the floor and says 'I got mine but I want more'" is about America's greed and how we always want more even if we have our share. That's true for the Indians, too. We had our land but we wanted more, so we "got in our pickup and said I got mine but I want more" so we took their land. That line works for imperialism, too in the late 1800s and early 1900s. That's my interpretation. |
