| Robin Thicke – Blurred Lines Lyrics | 12 years ago |
| This is how I interpreted the song when I first heard it and was surprised when I read some of the reviews that talked about rape. I usually have no problem jumping in a conversation about woman's rights and rape culture, but I genuinely think the meaning of this song has been misconstrued. (I'm nervous about even typing this comment right now.) It bothers me how we can have real issues concerning gender discrimination and rape out there, yet this song is the primary focus of discuss. | |

I think the line is "ten thousand hands" not "ten thousand ants." Gorgeous song, either way. I listen to this whenever I'm feeling bummed about drawing. |

| The rap in this gave me goosebumps. I think that verse alone explains the meaning to the songs in a nutshell. | |
| Marina and the Diamonds – Boyfriend (Justin Bieber cover) Lyrics | 13 years ago |
|
I always loved Marina's twist to the lyrics. The original song is basically Bieber flaunting his wealth and saying how he could give his girl everything she wants. And this cover is, to me, like the realistic turnout. She might have all the material wealth, but since the boyfriend is touring all around the world making money, she has no companionship. And she's treated more like a trophy than a girlfriend- just a woman at his side for publicity ("kept me on your arm" "spent a month with me, boy, and never calling me your girlfriend"). This cover made me realize how shallow some of the lyrics in the original song are. Before I interpreted it as the typical love song about a guy telling a girl how good he'd be to her, but after hearing this, I noticed how some of the promises in the song are very superficial. He's vowing to have lots of money and always be around. Money's great but not really the deciding factor in a relationship and always being around is virtually impossible. I feel like this cover is the result of a girl falling for those lines and winding up in a very difficult relationship. ...Needless to say I like this version more. |

| This is what I got from it also, and I think Pink said as much in an interview about the song. | |
| Foo Fighters – These Days Lyrics | 14 years ago |

I've heard this song a million times, but I didn't pay attention to the lyrics until today and now I love it. To me, this song is about someone trying to come to terms with the loss of a friend/family member. They're trying to move on, pretend everything's normal, but the people around the school/workplace are constantly reminding them with consolation and/or plain pity; even though they're sympathizing with them, it's still agonizing because all they want to do is move on. I'm probably seeing it this way because 1.) I went through it myself as a kid and 2.) it's the only way I can see the verses (or maybe it's called a "hook" in this case, IDK music terminology that well) and the chorus coinciding. "One of these days the ground will drop out from beneath your feet One of these days your heart will stop and play its final beat One of these days the clocks will stop and time won't mean a thing One of these days their bombs will drop and silence everything" These are like the lines from someone who hasn't lost a loved one before. They don't know what to say, so they're telling this person the usually cliches lines: "the Lord works in mysterious ways," "these things happen," "they're in a better place." Maybe in this case it's something like "one of these days, you'll see them again." "Easy for you to say Your heart has never been broken Your pride has never been stolen Not yet not yet One of these days I bet your heart'll be broken I bet your pride'll be stolen I bet I bet I bet I bet" This is like an angry, fed-up rant or thought in response to them. "Easy for you to say, you've never been through this before. One of these days you'll go through this too. And I bet those corny thoughts won't help you any more than they help me." I could be projecting all of this, though. |
