I assumed Sydney was a girl until I read through this discussion. Then, going back and relooking through the lyrics, I noticed this stanza... We were in the basement Just giving our blood on stage and Pretending that we were famous While you were getting framed I went back to my room in Surrey Hills, yes I did I didn't know you were in trouble until you came in Just as skinny as a twig in my kitchen And told me I was looking at a dead man The whole stanza makes it sound like he's talking about a childhood friend, and the last line - I know it might not be literal, but still - makes it sound like its a guy. Either way there may be something to be said about the ambiguity of it all, especially considering that Sydney could be either a masculine or feminine name |
