I love this song, so obsessed. The acoustic version on Youtube is amazing, too. I don't understand why he wrote this (and glass) as a present for Juliet though, it's so sad! It seems to be about the end of a relationship, or the time before the inevitable end. "I hear it in your silence, when you don't speak [...] We're going nowhere, and we're going there fast" Neither of them is acting on her apparent dissatisfaction. It's really sad because he realizes that she's unhappy and he's saying that he accepts that their relationship may be over, but he's not going to end it, he's going to wait for her to make a decision. And he's willing to give her anything she needs/wants to stay with him, but he's okay if she doesn't stay with him, because he wants her to be happy "Anything to watch while we are waiting for this Apocalypse? What more is there to do?" "I'll take you shoppin', I'll take you daancin too [...] I'll give you diamonds, and I'll give you space so be with anyone you want, it's alright with me" He's letting her know that he still loves her, and even if he could go back in time and be with someone else or do something differently in their relationship, he wouldn't. "Our time is over Don't you know that if a time warp was open I'd stay right in my place that war is over" At the end it starts to sound a little more hopeful with "This war ain't over yet" but then he ends the song with "Our time is over". I don't know, maybe the fact that he's willing to give her whatever she wants, and he loves her no matter what, and that he wouldn't have done anything differently is what she was supposed to take away from the song. Because I know if a guy sang/played me this song, I would be like Oh shit, we're breaking up NOW. And I wouldn't want to get that for a present lol. Maybe they were actually going through a rough patch and this song was what was needed to fix it though. Obviously I'm not Juliet or Julian, so I have no idea whether this song actually represents their relationship. If I ever meet Julian I will definitely ask why he wrote such a depressing sort of breakup song as a gift to his wife though haha |

The problem with your interpretation is that Julian Casablancas didn't write this song... look at the bottom of the lyrics, it was written by Albert Hammond and Diane Warren. On this album a lot of other band members wrote the songs; Julian Casablancas recorded his parts separate from the rest of them a lot so the rest of the band would have a bigger part in it. |
