I have three interpretations of this song. First, the singer is in a relationship. The relationship is slowly falling apart and this song is the singer realizing it should end. He talks about how she is calm like the ocean and how they were able to tell each other anything. Also, he tries to keep up with her lifestyle, "Gettin' High drinkin' suicides I'll stay up here with you." The bridge is the singer hoping for the girl to remain innocent as stated in the first fragment; however he is a ware of her faults. Which leads us to the chorus, his once perfect girl is simply an illusion in his hopes of his once perfect relationship. The singer repairing the turquoise ring represents how hard he is lingering on to this once perfect girl. Then the chorus is sung one more time and he then continues to repeat "You're just an illusion in my world." This, in my opinion, is when the singer is coming to terms with the fact that his once dream girl is gone and will remain a simple Hologram in his head. Second, the singer is simply talking about his lover and how she is so perfect that she feels like an illusion. However, he then sums it up with "But lately, lately I see you" to prove her existence. Finally, the singer is in a trance imagining this amazing girl or had a dream of said girl. Now this can lead to two things: 1.) He snaps out of trance/dream and realizes this perfect girl is "...just an illusion." 2.) He snaps out of the trance/dream and sees the girl later on. |

| I don't find this song to be about Usher getting it in the ass from a girl. Basically he's switching roles with the girl (not penetration-wise). She'll do the stuff he normally does before sex and act the way he does during sex. Instead of being on the top like he normally is (apparently) she is going to be on top and he'll be on the bottom. Hence - Trading Places. Just listen to the song while having sex and you'll be perfectly fine. | |
