Lana Del Rey – Lolita Lyrics 13 years ago
Lana Del Rey likes Lolita. The novel - by Vladamir Nabokov (about a middle aged guy who becomes obsessed with a 12 year old girl). She references Lolita in Off to the Races - "Light of my life, fire of my loins - as well. Early demos were called Lolyta. No big deal, just a minor spelling change. It means the same thing.

Also, isn't it "no more skipping heart beats with the boys downtown" instead of "never was in love, skipping heart beats with the boys downtown? Maybe the album version is different, because I haven't heard earlier demos. But in the album it's "no more".

Lana Del Rey – Pawn Shop Blues Lyrics 13 years ago
I think the lyrics in this are pretty literal. It's about Lana, and her exboyfriend, I assume. She's "on [her] own", and has found that she has to pawn the earrings he gave her, to make means for herself. And seeing that love be sold is a sad thing for her, she "almost cried" as she watched them go. She had to do this to make money - she doesn't live a lavish lifestyle "I don't mind living on bread and oranges" but she needs to pay for travelling expenses, and so, she sells the earrings he gave her.

It's also very clear why they broke up - "in the name of higher consciousness" - ie because of God. Lana seems to believe in God and has acknowledged she had a "wild" past, but hasn't had a drink or anything in seven years. She's a reformed wild child, and upon having the spiritual reawakening she seems to have had, she had to "let the best man [she] knew go". She would rather "know what God knows" because "no man can keep [her] together". She relies on God now.

But she still has those Pawnshop Blues, watching her old love go. It reminds her of him, and is symbolic of finally letting him go.

Lana Del Rey – Video Games Lyrics 14 years ago
What's so great about this song is that juxtaposition of the old and the new. The song feels old, vintage, and continues to feel that way, until you hear the word video games. "What? Video games? Were they even invented back then? Wait - this song was released this year? Seriously?" It's just so mesmerizing. The images of swinging in a back yard while your man pulls up in his "fast car", whistling your name are so old-timey, and then suddenly he's playing video games. It's sort of funny, in a very romantic kind of way.

The way I see it, Lana's not complaining. She's not being snarky when she tells him to "go play a video game". She's enjoying it - just being with him, watching video games. I'm pretty sure Lana said something similiar - that this was a time in her life when she wasn't really focusing on her career or personal ambitions, and was just happy and content to be with her man. For him to come home and play video games. She explicity says this in the song, actually - "this is my idea of fun - playing video games". That is not sarcasm.

She's just happy to be with her guy, basically. "It's all for you" sort of thing. I think it's a sad song because although it's sung in the present tense, I'm not sure it is for Lana. She loves/loved this guy once, and singing it must be pretty sad. And yeah, she did say it still makes her cry. It makes me cry. It's beautiful, and happy, and sad. The "world is built for two" line is probably the saddest. "Only worth living if somebody is loving you". A lot of people feel they don't, and to hear that is sort of a punch to the gut.

It's a happy song that evokes a lot of sadness. It's about a past that lives on in the present. Honoring love that has been lost.

Lana Del Rey – Born to Die Lyrics 14 years ago
Album version doesn't have the "original" lyrics, folks. Too bad. "Fuck" is harsher and gives the song much more bite.

Lana said this song, along with Video Games and Blue Jeans, is part of a sort of "trilogy", all about the same guy.

Lana Del Rey – Yayo Lyrics 14 years ago
I love this song. So beautiful.

Yeyo/Yayo is slang for cocaine. Lana's often referred to her teenage self as being "crazy", and hasn't had a drink or do anything since she was 18, so this is probably about her past love/bad habits.

*Also, the lyrics are supposed to be "A tunnel lined with yellow lights", not "a ton aligned with yellow lights"

* This information can be up to 15 minutes delayed.
