Leonard Cohen – The Stranger Song Lyrics 14 years ago
I really enjoyed your take on this song. I think Cohen is a great poet and I really like the verses you pointed out just as much ("handle on the road" "another man lay down his hand") and I agree this does not sound to me like a hate song for a player, it is more of a sad look at a woman's life who can't quite get out of this habit. (can't close the door to her shelter) I also agree that not only this new man is a player too but also she has lost the ability to trust anyways so it is not gonna matter anymore!

I also really liked the sarcastic mention of a "joseph looking for a manger" that suddenly they all become a saint!

I don't think he is puzzled. I think the end of the song is the new man leaving and that is all the set-up for him leaving her. (having a date on a bridge on an endless river?) and she knows he is not gonna be there.
