Favorite song ever.. I can relate... I broke down each stanza... I thought I told you, he'd be home soon. Couldn't help myself, you're too good to be true. In this first stanza she is trying to fight back temptation of a man she deeply loved before she got into her new relationship. She is telling him that her boyfriend is going to be home soon which kind of insinuates that she has asked him to leave. In the last two lines however, it seems she is flustered by past feelings and is in a sense shocked by his arrival. I fall short each time, every time he ain't here. You and your charms creep closer, closer and near. In this stanza she simply is saying that in the past with other boyfriends she would make the mistake and cheat or let him back into her life with hopes that maybe he would change. His charm she just could never resist and she fell for the lies due to her weakness and love for him. Like a fool for fire I fall, with my pride and all. Like a bomb before explosion, ticking by your call. She is basically saying that every time he came back it was always the same and everytime she got burned by him, it never failed. In the line "with my pride and all" she means that even against her better judgement she would allow him in. Every time he would do her wrong and when all was said and done she was weak and he was strong. He always won and she always lost and his ego was always boosted at the thought that he could have her whenever he tried. Her pride was shot because she could never resist him even when she knew he was going to screw her over. You're the wiser one, disguised from greed, and I'm just a child, belongs on her knees. I think that this stanza is an inference to when they were in a relationship. Maybe he always assumed the role of the smarter one and may be in some sense treated her like a child. She may be looked up to him and in some sense he gave her fatherly advice. But I found a boy who I love more, than I ever did, you before. So stand beside the river I cried, and let yourself down. Look how you want me now that I don't need you Contrast to the beginning stanza i think she has finally snapped out of the temptation and realizes that what she has with her new boyfriend is more than anything she will ever have with him. She doesn't want to ruin that relationship and basically tells him he can hit the road. Ironically, he may have actually been serious this time but she realizes that the only reason he is after her is because he sees that she is doing fine. Isn't that just the way it always seems to pan out. So, you thought that I'd crumble to my knees. At the first sight of you crawling back to me. He basically expected for her to give in like she always does. He just knew that she couldn't resist him. He used the love that he knew she had for him to take advantage of her but it didnt work. To whisper "Will you leave your man?" Cause you swear that this time you can, Stand by me. I won't stand by you. He's basically telling her all the things that he knows she wants to hear so that he can have her like he always does. He promises her that he will be there for her and do right by her but this thim she tells him no. Cause I found a boy who I love more, than I ever did you, before. So stand beside the river I cried and let yourself down. Look how you want me now, that I don't need you. I ain't yours for no taking, you must be mistaken. I could never look in your eyes, and settle for wrong and ignore the right. shes basically telling him that he cant have her anymore, shes not going for it. she tells him that she couldnt give up something as great as her relationship for something and someone who can never do right by her. It's similar to the idea of choosing a rock over a diamond. she's not a foolish woman. Well, I found a boy that loves me more, than you ever did before. So stand beside the river you'll cry and let yourself down. Look how you want me now that I don't need you. |

Okay so this is my favorite song ever....out of all the break up songs ive ever hear this is the one that i feel i can relate to the most. This song is clearly about a heartbroken girl who has come to the realization that the boy she loved was only using her. I decided to break down the song by each stanza to give better insight. You have a way of coming easily to me And when you take, you take the very best of me So I start a fight cause I need to feel something And you do what you want cause I'm not what you wanted When she says "you have a way of coming easily to me" she means that it is so natural for her to embrace and love him unconditionally. "And When You Take, you take the very best of me" simply means that she gives him all of her and makes sure that she always gives the best of her in all aspects of the relationship. "So I start a fight cause I need to feel something"- i absolutely love this line. what she means here is that she will find things to fight about to evoke some sort of emotion from him. She is in some way substituting and comparing his anger to his love for her. she feels that if she can evoke some sort of emotion from him than that means he cares and her mind can be eased. "And you do what you want cause I'm not what you wanted" This line she is saying that in the relationship he does what he wants with no consideration of her feelings. He does this because he truly doesn't care for her he just enjoys the fact that someone cares for him. He truly doesn't want to be with her. [Chorus:] Oh what a shame, what a rainy ending given to a perfect day Just walk away, no use defending words that you will never say And now that I'm sitting here thinking it through I've never been anywhere cold as you "Oh what a shame, what a rainy ending given to a perfect day" This line simply means the end of their relationship. She was naiive in thinking it was perfect so she was in a sense blind sided by the break up. "Just walk away, no use defending words that you will never say" This line is similar to Adele's Best For last when she says "and you'll say all of the right things without a clue, and you'll save the best for last like im the one for you". These two lines are similar because in the song "cold as you" she is waiting for him to tell her that he loves her and he wants to be with her but deep down she knows thats not how he feels. Typically in breakups people lie when it comes to their reason why they do not want to be with that person anymore. In a way she hoped that he would tell her that he did love her during their relationship to give her some closure, but all he gives her is lies after lies. "And now that I'm sitting here thinking it through I've never been anywhere cold as you" I think that this line isn't solely referring to the past. when i say the past im referring to events in her life that may have left her bitter and angry. This line seems so much more deep than that. I get the sense that when she says "ive never been anywhere as cold as you" shes saying that even now with the realization of what he's done, she could never do that to anyone else in a future relationship. You put up walls and paint them all a shade of gray And I stood there loving you and wished them all away And you come away with a great little story Of a mess of a dreamer with the nerve to adore you "You put up walls and paint them all a shade of gray" This line simply means that he didn't invest much into the relationship. He never really shared much about himself so that they could grow close. He just never really let her in his heart. "And I stood there loving you and wished them all away"- even though he was giving her nothing she still believed that he would come around and regardless of it all she still loved him. "And you come away with a great little story Of a mess of a dreamer with the nerve to adore you"- i absolutely love this line because it strikes so close to home. My ex boyfriend use to do this with all his past ex girlfriends. He would always brag to me about how they loved him so much and he broke their hearts while he came out unscathed. This line simply means that now that the relationship is over he has a story to tell to anybody who will listen about a girl who loved him so much but he really didn't care about. She is acknowledging the fact that he played her. [Repeat Chorus] You never did give a damn thing honey but I cried, cried for you And I know you wouldn't have told nobody if I died, died for you (Died for you) "You never did give a damn thing honey but I cried, cried for you And I know you wouldn't have told nobody if I died, died for you(Died for you)"- This line simply means that the relationship was nothing to him and she was nothing to him. His feelings for her could not be distinguished from a stranger he just met on the streets. Oh what a shame, what a rainy ending given to a perfect day Every smile you fake is so condescending Counting all the scars you made And now that I'm sitting here thinking it through I've never been anywhere cold as you "Every smile you fake is so condescending" I think this line can be referring to both the present in the past. I think now that she knows how he truly felt about her all of the memories of them together just seem so fake and forced. Every time she thinks of him smiling during their times together it hurts her because she knows it was all pretend. I also think that this line is referring to when she sees him and he smiles it is like a slap in the face because he knows that she knows what he truly did. "Counting all the scars you made"- That relationship just really damaged her and it really has scarred her. |
