I don't have the energy to completely break it down but: Around a focal point (break), there are many other things 'moments' missed. Good luck is a (like a falling tree in a forest where there is no one to hear it, it does not exist unless someone percieves it, as for example, good luck) I am no-one, no-one is me. aka. I am not one, I am not 'I', I am not what people make me. Looking to the future is just today, but you don't realise it yet. I go away to shed mind, reveal being Religion is on the right track, it's got good roots, the holes in religion need unwinding to reveal the substance that is percieved as a hole. Language is facilitated by mind but it's useful. "I got a pain that spans millions of lives" - mind causes pain in all mind having existence Before mind is more desirable than After mind There is no cause for causing pain We have 'climbed' with our development of 'mind', and we must fall, to realise it's dangers. |

My view is this: It's a song about the essential essence of life. /You know I'm around you I woundn't be if I didn't love you I'm going to run through you You know you're quite a character It goes that I haven't got a care/ This is 'the essential nature' talking and this continues, to converse with the mind: /When we float down the river I wonder will I lose you When we roam through a blizzard/ 'Will I lose my you, my mind?' Then it changes, to the mind talking: /I hope I'm not the other guy We'll never scale those heights again We've lost our daugther Let's plan to hide from all our friends In silent waters/ The song then switches between the two personas for the remainder: /Be careful of what you are What you see is just a small part You must look for yourself in others And all the places that you go You see that they are part of you/ This bit is great. Be careful of what you think of yourself as, your perception is narrow, you must see that which is of all existence, we're all the same energy/existence/being. /I want to again be holding hands With you underwater And couldn't we get a second chance To go back and start over I was thinking before That it was all my fault We Dropped the baton/ Mind (an input into your perception) dominates Being (nature, life, essence, perception) in the majority of mind holding perceptions, as a natural course (it's why we have minds, they've been useful evolutionarily for this reason), to return underwater (before birth, in the womb) is to return to the state before this dominance occurred. Before, the mind was thinking that it was it's fault (the mind judges, perception sees), but now it believes that 'we' (both) dropped the baton. The perception, or being, fooled by the ruse of the mind, is also at fault, making way for all the hate, anger, jealousy, dependence, need, vengence etc in the world that mind goes on to create through the being's submission to mind. /Sunday waves and makes faces at us all the time And I'm wondering what I call mine/ Sunday is the day of worship in the Christian faith which pervades American society. I think these lines are referring to religion and John's mind is pondering what it calls his set of beliefs. |

Every time I revisit these lyrics (from the whole album), to me, it appears to me that John has beliefs which are closely aligned with (if not influenced by) the teachings of Eckhart Tolle. Im central to nowhere

 - Through a traumatic life event / realisation, many choose to 'sweep clean'. The teachings encourage a shedding of self and witnessing of the essence beyond form that makes up our surroundings. Perhaps talking of his own journey, seeing the prevalent essence of the universe. We should be grateful to the gods Whoever theyre real to they are
 I value my placement as in Hell Remember that moment that I fell
 - Some religions appear to have a foundation in returning to a state of 'no-mind', that have been warped over the years. They offer something to someone. I think this line is referring to John valuing his role/physical existence in our world as a musician as being 'hell' or 'sin' in that it is corrupting, as acceptance of it as well as being a great 'reminder' to as where he fell from. Anything that could one day be is as real as what Im saying If something is nothing it must not be something in any possible way
 Lose yourself in the far off worlds that are right under your feet Switch below with above all the way up into infinity - Anything that COULD be in the future is as real as it is described through words (e.g. it doesn't exist). You must not be bothered by 'nothing'. Many people say 'nothing' is bothering them, even to themselves, but if they are telling themselves that 'nothing' is bothering them then it must be something and here lies the problem. You should lose 'yourself', ego / mind, in finding the transcendental realm of existence which stares you in the face. Substitute the universe with your place in it (mind / ego considers itself primary ahead of all else, what is my purpose etc) hence 'above' We should be thankful who we are Whether we know ourselves or not Walking alongside myself
 Neither of us listens very well - Whether we know our true nature or not. If one is not aware of his true nature / light / essence, one walks alongside himself. Im dreading a time that is not near As a man on cross I have no fear 
I cant believe these words Im saying
 - 'I am dreading something which is not real' (mind / ego / dark) then 'I am enlightened, I have no fear' (no-mind / essential nature / essence/ light) - 'I can't believe these words..' I think is John himself admitting that he would not have imagined finding such beliefs or relating to Christianity, based on his previous convictions. |

Hence, we have come too far with Mind to have sense of being at all. We're putting the law back in your hands Today we're setting our sights for a new land - Reject the mind, move towards being Lean into me cuz there's no signs on the vehicle - You must feel this place, being. You cannot 'find' being by looking for it. Look out and see cuz the city has no people - I am unsure, but I interpret as the 'new land' or being doesn't have people, personification and form are subordinate at this level (hinted at below too, re energy) They don't know who you are but they know who you will be - Perhaps referring to mind-identified beings having a tendency to look to what you will be/bring in the future, rather than existing in and witnessing you, for who you are in the narrow and true time of 'now' Monsters of all colors and we're all distorted energy - Mind can manifest itself with many behaviours, morals, values etc (colors) - our essential nature (energy) is distorted by it Pain looks on up at me And when I'm beat From the backseat I'll crash my car - Mind is the source of all pain, we do it to ourselves, we're in the backseat when our mind (or pain) is in the driver seat. Incensed I feel like a fool when I'm feeling - When you feel pain, sometimes consider yourself foolish for feeling it Right off this blossoming hurts like I'm peeling - I think this refers to the awakening (blossoming) being like revealing new, fresh skin beneath, the stripping away of the old, dead skin. Oh God I can't be found when I'm dreaming Words hard I'm into the sound of their meaning - if one was into the meaning of the words, one would need to be of mind to consider them. Being can witness sensory inputs, but it is not concerned with their reasons I am divorced from the image I've created - To be divorced from ones image is to mean you do not identify with form (any more, because it is created). It is a key stage of witnessing your essential nature (being/'new world'), identification with your form (your mind, your body, your personality, something in the physical world) by it's very definition prevents you from transcending the physical to witness the unmanifested. So many nights and days that are separate from the ages - So much time (nights and days) is spent looking towards the past and present (ages) which are separate from the present, now and ultimately being/essential nature, through identifying with our mind images of the past and future. Thank you for the lessons that I learned while John was sleeping - John, refers to his form (mind, body, personality, 'him') that he no longer identifies with, such that he is able to transcend the physical realm Whoever it seemed the Creator did the teaching - Being (essential nature, 'new land', god) is the creator and teacher of love, peace and joy which was given thanks for in the previous line :) |

I think this is a dialogue between one (Light) and ones ego (Dark). First bit, taking advice from your ego as to what to do, where does it get (us)? Second, the ego is selfish and needs to be fulfilled, it creates highs or happiness. Third, the ego is responsible for lows and negative emotions too, to contrast with highs. Perpetuating the cycle to seek highs. It's common to believe that fate is responsible, drawing attention away from the ego itself. Will we ever get together in a song - will the ego and being be able to co-exist, without the being being suffocated by the ego Will you ever tell everybody bout right and wrong - the ego is always right, whether you realise it or not. Even when you think it's wrong, your ego is doing the thinking :) Will you ever let anyone one on in the meaning of life and death - as alluded to in other tracks - dying before you die is to be born Do you need me or are you waiting for my last breath - your ego dies when you're at deaths door, your being finally shines though. Do you need me ego? or are you waiting till I have no time left? |
