Joni Mitchell – A Case Of You Lyrics 14 years ago
She did have a relationship with Leonard Cohen, right before she hit it big. I seem to remember it was in 1967 or so, not long after she left Chuck Mitchell. Joan is quite cryptic about her songs, whom each of them are about..... but "Blue" was recorded and released during and immediately following her break-up with Graham Nash (she had moved on to James Taylor by the time of its release.) One interesting bit Joan has shared is her songs are sometimes compilations, and many times "aftermath" sentiments from relationships past...... relationships that have long since expired. "Case of You" is undoubtedly about Leonard Cohen..... just as "My Old Man" and "River" refer to Graham Nash and the push-pull of that relationship. She's all but admitted "The Last Time I Saw Richard" is about Chuck Mitchell..... "Little Green" is an ode to Kilauren (Kelly), her daughter. "Carey is about an actual guy named Carey she encountered during her Crete adventures..... I've never heard an account of "All I Want", but I'm going to take a stab at it and say it's about her relationship with James Taylor.... just as I feel the song "Blue" probably is as well. I didn't intend to run through the whole track list, but they flow together so well, it's hard not to address them as a whole body!

Steely Dan – Green Earrings Lyrics 14 years ago
The whole "Royal Scam" album is about burned-out, tripped-out, world-weary criminals of various description..... the jewel thievery notion is probably true.

Steely Dan – Godwhacker Lyrics 14 years ago
I can't recall the source but I remember a reputable article which claimed the song is about the Bush 43 administration and the war on terror ( the "umbrella" war on terror, not just OBL but also the WMD propaganda being spread at the time). The underlying notion was how ridiculous it is (was) that this band of delusional leaders (Bush 43, OBL, Saddam, etc.) all fancied themselves as earthly Gods, or on some kind of religious mission.... ones that included mass murder.

Steely Dan – Gaslighting Abbie Lyrics 14 years ago
Becker and Fagen confirmed the Charles Boyet "Gaslight" film connection when they were guests on Marian McPartland's "Piano Jazz" radio program. They didn't elaborate (what a shock), but with the "driving your wife mad" as a pretext I'd say the thoughts about a man, his mistress and an inconvenient wife are probably accurate.

Steely Dan – Black Friday Lyrics 14 years ago
Becker and Fagen were guests on Marian McPartland's NPR show "Piano Jazz", gave both great commentary and a rockin-boppin in-studio concert. "Black Friday" was one of their selections; according to Fagen the song is definitely steeped in thoughts about the Great Depression..... as might be expected he said little else.

Steely Dan – Bad Sneakers Lyrics 14 years ago
As with all Dan songs there's cryptic references galore... I can't recall where I read an article about this song, but I definitely remember Fagen saying it was about Vietnam Vets...... he offered nothing more.....
