For me, this song is about a relationship. It could be any relationship, but I believe it’s a lover. I’ve experienced this song, it is so relevant to my life, that I got the piano part at the end tattooed on my arm. This is my favourite song. “I'm a mess I guess It's what I've asked for, It's what I've needed” He acknowledges that he’s a mess, quite simply… he deserved it for whatever reason, and sometimes we need to feel pain if we are going to change or move on. “Well, you know me better than that Or at least you did then something happened But once again something's happened” He’s speaking to the person he loves, saying that she knows him… or used to, but something happened to them, and she doesn’t know him anymore. Maybe It’s implying that she didn’t think he’d change. “The confidence you held in us Was the rope we almost hung ourselves with At times I wonder if we really took the steps to break right through it” Now he’s saying that she had so much confidence in their relationship, and put so much into it emotionally, maybe it became obsessive, or they relied too much upon each other for their stability and happiness, that it ended up destroying their relationship because of how unhealthy it was, and he questions whether they did the right thing to move away from that. “I know that there were better days But to see the light and to feel the rays Life was always back and forth and we were idling or making useless progress" Their relationship was really good for a while, they were happy. They were in love. Things weren’t all bad, but it was an emotional rollercoaster, and that never changed. It was either highs or lows. “Waiting for the rain to stop Destination: beautiful Seems that I'm still waiting for the sun Someday will come back to us If you're willing let it go Why won't you just let this be your sun?” He’s waiting for things to get better between them, he wants to be happy, He wants something beautiful. To me, sun is a metaphor for hope and happiness. He’s waiting to be happy, things aren’t good. Someday he will be happy again. If she’s willing, they can let it go, why can’t she just be happy with things? “It seems like yesterday we had the world our way But some say we're headed for destruction” Things were good, but now people don’t think it’s going to last. “I'll ask you "what in the world should we do?" The light is green, our break is through Are we not trying or we're trying too hard?” They’re questioning at this point whether it’s worth it to stay in the relationship at all, maybe they went on a break, and they’re trying again. He’s wondering if they’re not trying to fix things, or if they’re trying too hard and it’s not working, or they’re not going about it right. “You know I never want to miss I hold on tight and reminisce But it's bittersweet to me “ He doesn’t want to miss her, he holds on tight to the memories and the good times, but even though things were good the memories are bittersweet because things aren’t the same. “When time stands still as it's trapped inside the letterbox you gave back to me But I'm the one who keeps on reading But I'm the one who wants to let it go I'm the first to speak and you're the last to know Another scene that we're creating I need to know if we're still making useless progress” It’s over, she’s moving on, but he hasn’t. He wants to let it go, maybe he’s bitter. “I’m the first to speak and you’re the last to know” Maybe this means that whenever they had a spat, even though he would address it, she never understood. Just another argument, they’re still making useless progress, and even though it’s over, she hasn’t disappeared from his life or his heart. Then the chorus again, twice. I believe he’s talking to himself and us now, telling us to be hopeful, telling us to be happy with the way things are, even through all of our hardships. -Jennie |
