I remember reading somewhere that this was about Van's friend Julie who was dying of T.B. The line where it says: "You know we got John comin' around here later", Should actually say "You know we got JANET comin' around here later", which is a reference to Van's wife Janet Planet.
It's an incredibly emotional and raw song. You can hear him slowly breaking down as the song carries on, until he's sobbing at the end. Truly heart breaking. |

This is my favourite Cat Power song by far. Such a beautiful interpretation of the original (which I believe is by Jessie Mae Hemphill). There's something very haunting about this version. Gives me the shivers. |

I don't think it's about the mother feeling guilt. Have you read the article that talks about the actual accident? The mother talks about holding her dead child - that's what it's referring to when he said 'one more night, to be your mother'. The last night she got to hold her child. I think the guilt part is referring to the drunk driver who ran into them. Just my 2 cents. |
