I think it's kind of a sarcastic play on words of the hypocrisy, conformity, and skewed moral values of modern christianity. Not so much the actual "giving oneself to the devil or evil" like everyone says on here- that's just shallow and stupid. It rather takes what is seen as good christianity and analyzes its malevolent intensions. How religion does evil things to influence- rather brainwash in a sense, captivate and control those who don't believe until they are stricken with fear and violent imagery and blindly follow the puppeteer who preaches to them conformity and the way to live their own lives. Again done through metaphorical exaggeration- "In fire baptized" doesn't really mean actual fire (satanic) it represents the burning, scarring nature baptism places- it's a scar that binds you forever indebted to a religion, it burns freedom of choice and leaves a burn to identify as a christian. most people here take it too literally.. |

from markasstrick84: Hetfield said the song was a reaction to the anti-American tone of their album ...And Justice for All - "This is the other side of that. America is a fucking good place. I definitely think that. And that feeling came about from touring a lot. You find out what you like about certain places and you find out why you live in America, even with all the bad fucked-up shit. It's still the most happening place to hang out.."
So the song meanings of ...And Justice for All and of Don't Tread on Me don't have to be mutually exclusive. You can think that something is a lost cause but still see some good in it. And around the time this song came out, there was a lot of turbulence going on in world affairs with America right in the middle (things don't change much, do they?). So he was saying that while America isn't perfect, its still a place to be proud of...
see you fucking idiot- you don't have to agree with american practices but I fucking hope you don't take what you have for granted |

Haha I guess any possible way to make this unpatriotic is the most popular choice with idiots like you. Yllas has no idea what he's talking about. The gadsden flag has a snake on it for a reason- for a symbol- an idea. And hey, same symbol on the album cover, and don't tread on me is the name of the song AND written on the gadsden flag! well according to you patriotism sucks so this song can't be about that must be just a coincidence.... Jesus Christ swallow your fucking pride- this song is about a reverence in the history, conception, and sacrifices made for this country and as an ode out of respect for those who die everyday so that shit heads like you can talk about how bad our country is and how a song can't possibly support the sacrifice made because they don't deserve support. I don't agree with a lot of our practices and politics and ideas either, but I am damn grateful for the sacrifices made for our freedom. Let them have this one-- they deserve it! |
