To me, this song describes what most people experience when we're in love, but it does it in a symbolic, almost random way; mainly because that's how the nature of love is: it goes beyond logic itself. When he says "You'll find me crashing through my mother's door" I think he's referring to the oedipal (Freudian concept) nature of a love relationship between a man and a woman, in this case the man revives the old mother-son relationship as an adult through falling in love with women, he seems to imply many women in a lapse of many years. He could also be referring to the uterus/vagina when he say's "mother's door". When he refers to himself as "a belly dancer who will shake forever and he'll never care" I think he's referring to allowing himself to experiment sexual relations freely in a creative way (belly dancer) putting aside any shame (never care), fulfilling all of his sexual desires (shake forever). In the "building jumper" part I think he's referring to the feeling of being whole and omnipotent that he obtains by being in love and also that's he's willing to take the risk to protect that relationship and the risk that the relationship itself means. In a metaphorical way he's saying "I can do anything beside you and I'm willing to do anything for you" By "break my body, hold my bones" he's describing the will and desire to be consumed by his lover; he want's her to be aware of his essence, to tear him apart if that's what it takes, so she can reach his core. In the last part I think he's describing the pain when this relationship comes to an end (hurt) and the woman moving on to another relationship (somebody got her) As you can see, my interpretation doesn't have anything to do with incest/S&M like some of the commenter's. This is by far my personal favorite love song (I recommend searching for the acoustic demo versions in YouTube) and if I were to cover it, I would dare to alter this masterpiece to portray my own experience. I would modify the ending to the following: Somebody get her Somebody get hurt Somebody got hurt. |

For me, this song is about a man who was unfaithful to her girl. He finds her and tries to explain her and fix things, but he still cannot resist the whores, which is "the devil between them". He feels that he can't live without her and even after all that, she can't leave him either; they're chained. The strong sounding "Uh" is when they yell to each other, they fight because of the infidelity. Even though they're still together, they both remember what happened and can't stop thinking about it, hence the "choir of whores that go 'uh uh' all night" hunting and punishing them. Mary wonders if she should forgive him of if she's too tired of all that. The last "Uh", the "sound that the mother breaks when the baby breaks" is the howl or yell she makes when she finds out that she's pregnant, and that now they're chained forever. |
