| Matisyahu – I Will Be Light Lyrics | 14 years ago |

Matisyahu created a powerful masterpiece with this song. While this song is about God and his want for us to serve him by glorifying His world and His creation, this song can also be taken in a secular viewpoint on an altruistic way of life. He refers to this world of darkness, corrupt by people with no decency, no morals. When he says, "I will be light," he means he will bring good into this world. Like "King Without A Crown" Matisyahu mentions that we are slaves to ourselves. One does what they think will please themselves. One puts higher priority on themselves then to the people around oneself "Time will continue without you, so in the end, it's not about you." The song stresses this and its so true. Why waste time worrying about ourselves? What good does that bring the world? None. "You've got one tiny moment in time, for life, to shine, to burn away the darkness." When I first took in the true meaning of this song, I was hit with guilt. The meaning of life is not to take care of yourself. The meaning of life, is to spread [God's] light. |

When Matisyahu says "We die for you and still do", he is referring to the persecution that Jews endure (i.e. The Holocaust) just because they worship God. To this day, Jews are still persecuted. When he says "So I say to you, this is nothing new", Matisyahu acknowledges that this persecution has been going on for thousands of years and that it's not going to stop them from worshiping God. Hope this helps! Ben |
