| Wilco – Jesus, Etc. Lyrics

I haven't seen my interpretation of the song anywhere and it's kind of weird and I'm not sure if it makes sense but maybe someone else will find meaning in it. Basically I thought the first line "Jesus, don't cry" was literally asking Jesus not to cry even though I think many people here take it as "Jesus, don't cry" i.e., oh my goodness, don't cry. Anyways it goes on to describe that Jesus is just a person like us and maybe he needs us as much as we need him. I'm not religious at all but it's just like about the thought that the world is a crazy place and so many people (myself not included) put so much faith into Jesus, but he's just a human.
I have no idea if that made sense. But all right. |

I see where you're coming from - the lyrics aren't essential to getting the full effect, for sure - but I did read an interview (if I find the link I'll make it a point to come back and post it here) - where Kevin Shields explicitly stated that even though they're pretty much indecipherable throughout the album, he put a lot of effort into the lyrics. |

Ugh this song is so eerie and sad. Always thought it was about having trouble moving on after someone else dies. It could be about someone's friend having trouble after the speaker dies or about the speaker having trouble after a friend dies, it's kind of ambiguous. It's incredibly eerie but one of their best songs I think; it's a side of them you don't see much anymore. |

These are the lyrics to "A Rock to Cling To", as evidenced by the fact that it ends with "Now I just need a rock to cling to." Great song nonetheless, and it's always fascinating to see how their lyrics changed from relentlessly dark on earlier EPs, to optimistic, and then cynical on "It's a Kids World". |

I just think it's a little unnerving to name the opening track to an album "Atrocity Exhibition" and have it's chorus be "this is the way, step inside!" i.e., my work is an atrocity. And then there's the whole "for entertainment they watch his body twitch" - i.e., my misery has become your entertainment. It's a profoundly disturbing song, and not one I listen to very often... but damn he was brilliant. |

I'm not even sure people read this far in the comments but I felt compelled to comment because I always viewed this song as uplifting even though a bunch of the people here seem to think otherwise...
Basically, I've always thought of it as Ian acknowledging the seriousness and general un-fixableness (couldn't think of an actual word there, ugh) of his own problems while at the same time trying to get some other person to understand that even though his life is pretty much shit, "yours" doesn't have to be. I think part of that was I always heard it as "I walk in silence / but don't walk away in silence" for some reason. Hmm. But it's a fantastic song nonetheless. |
