Death Cab for Cutie – Cath... Lyrics 12 years ago
It's about Catherine from Wuthering Heights, after she marries Edgar Linton (well intentioned man) because of the pressure of society to marry wealthy men (someone else's dream). And her heart is dying because she really loves Heathcliff but she married Linton (you said your vows and you closed the door) "on so many men who would've loved you more"- refers to Heathcliff. In the end, it's Cathy's love for Heathcliff and indecision about whether to leave Linton that kills her.

I read somewhere that this song was inspired by Wuthering Heights so that's how I see it.

Of Monsters And Men – Dirty Paws Lyrics 13 years ago
I can definitely see how this can be a song about World War Two. I like to think it's about WWII anyway, but the line that made me think that was "the birds they got help from below, from dirty paws and creatures of snow". the birds can reference the Allies. dirty paws, to me, means like blood on your hands or when you've done something bad and your hands are unclean. so dirty paws can mean corrupt or has done bad things, which could reference either Russia or America in helping the Allies, because Stalin ruled Russia before WWII as well as after and did horrible things in the Great Purges, or 'dirty paws' could reference America helping the war by dropping the atomic bombs which killed a lot of people. But the line 'creatures of snow' definitely sounds like a reference to Russia.
This is just my interpretation, mind you.

Sting – Russians Lyrics 13 years ago
The line "I hope the Russians love their children too" is saying, that if the Russians started a nuclear war, it wouldn't be just the soldiers in the war, the entirety of the countries would suffer- children would be killed and grow up in nuclear wasteland. If you love your children, you wouldn't start an atomic war. "Mr Krushchev said 'we will bury you"- Krushchev did say that and JFK asked if it was a threat. Each side was threatening to start a nuclear war on the other. "We share the same biology, regardless of ideology."- we're all human, regardless of whether we're communists or capitalists. Mr Reagan says we will protect you- the president is promising to nuke the Russians if a war started out, to protect "america's children" and then again with the line "what might save me and you (meaning both the americans and the russians) is if the russians love their children too."
It's not a racist song, it's a song promoting peace to the end of the cold war.

Emeli Sandé – Read All About It Part III Lyrics 13 years ago
I think it's about a highly scrutinized gay couple who can't come out because of publicity and hatred. "you've got the words to change a nation, but you're biting your tongue,"- (coming out), "baby, we're a little different, there's no need to be ashamed."

And the entire song is about them wanting to come out to the public, they don't care about the hate that they'll receive anymore. "put it in all of the papers, they can read all about it." "it's about time we got some airplay of our version of events."

I am just absolutely convinced that this is what this entire song is about. It's very bittersweet, sweet because they want to come out and be themselves but they're afraid and ugh, beautiful song.

Florence + the Machine – Never Let Me Go Lyrics 13 years ago
I think this song is almost perfectly parallel to the Titanic. That may or may not have been Florence's intention, but it's quite a beautiful coincidence.

Florence + the Machine – Landscape Lyrics 14 years ago
I love the lines:

"I wanna give you back the open sky
Give you back the open sea"

I want to believe that those lines are about trying to help someone with depression, trying to make them happy when they're obviously not, 'giving them back' their happiness.
I think the song is definitely about someone with severe depression.
