I love this song. That said, it also creeps me out and haunts me. It doesn't help that I watched "The Road" for the first time before hearing this song. If you have not seen the video for this song, please do yourself a service (favor?) and watch. John Hillcoat adds his usual desolate and foreboding edge to the piece. Death, punishment, and solitude looms and hangs over every note and breath of this song. Mariqueen Maandigs perfect voice coupled with the screeches and plonks of innovative tech and antique instruments is brilliant. I'm not sure of the motivation and exact meaning behind this, but if it was to etch its melody in my brain and make me give shadows a second glance...good job. |

If you watch the documentary "Blood into Wine" it's about Maynard opening a winery and vineyard. In the documentary he talks about his mother Judith and how she was paralyzed for over 20 years because of an aneurysm. He also mentions in the documentary why he writes and creates what he does. His songs are for him to get through personal strife etc and to help others if he can. I would think that this is about his mother, her devotion, his anger. |

To me this is a song of happiness without any sense of deep thought of the future. Yes, right now we are happy in this vapid environment, but we don't take to heart all the things that are destroyed and polluted to make our "beautiful day" possible. Our "day" is only going to last for so long. We should all find a deeper meaning as to why we are actually here. We enjoy simply being alive, but we should make our time here mean so much more. Tuna fleets clearing the sea out...oil fields at first light...The fact that we can a block or two to fill our tanks and we never give a thought as to how that fuel reaches the station. We can only sustain our way of life for so long. |
