Also, the "Other Shoe" refers to fear I think. The other being love. And like shoes, the come 1 at a time but always as a pair (o.k its a bit of stretch, but I'm working with it). |

Really hammering home the impending doom here. But the acknowledgement of their withering from within and the increasing inevitability of defeat. This part of Act 1 is David starting to step up and consider ways of fighting this "fall". The Judas part is to justify the extreme measures he takes to save them all. |

In this part of the story, David and Veronica are in a relationship but David has an ominous and unshakable feeling that the world will take a turn for the worse (by the mention of "world just gleams", I'm thinking nuclear). |

The entire album tells a story of David and Veronica in 70's England divided into 4 acts. This being the opening song on the album, tells of David (a light blub factory worker) and Veronica (a political activist) and their first meeting and inevitable romance that follows. |

I always figured that the "Queen of Hearts" is a woman you desire but is either far out of your league and/or much more experienced in the game of love.
However, you just can't help being lured back to her, she'll always be a few moves ahead but yet you just keep chasing.
The "Joker" is just a reference to cards, the phrasing of "Joker ain't the only fool..." implied to me that you are the fool here. Like a moth to a flame.
But yeah, nice song. |

| Pet Shop Boys – Can You Forgive Her? Lyrics

I wouldn't have even gone for a gay/straight interpretation. I just thought it was about a man who has no authority or say in the relationship ("because she's gone and made a fool of you in public again").
But ultimately the woman needs that authority/power hence asking for forgiveness ("if she begs you to?")
Just my interpretation. |
