All right, I'll have a swing at it. Apologies in advance for any misspellings / grammar errors, English is not my native language. First of all, I hear Tom saying "in the arms of a _lover_" instead of "another". For me the song portraits someone who just wants to love the sh*t out of his significant other in a very explicit way, the two-hearted spider being a metaphor for two people making sweet love (2x four limbs = 8 spider legs. The "naivety and fickle views" line makes me thing about inexperience and expectations he (I'll use he/she from now on for simplicity's sake) might had regarding how well he thought he would handle his feelings. But he feels his blood boil, meaning that he is loosing control over himself, he "saw shadows fuse" - he imagined them closing in on each other (alternatively, it could be him realising he screwed his chances with her very badly and is now cursing himself for his immaturity. "Every move you make breaks me / Every smile you fake breaks me" - Seems to give away that the other person doesn't seem to love him as much and he notices it from the way she behaves when they meet. "Build ourselves an island" is code for isolation with her, leaving everything else behind. And it has to be right away "I want it now" - a (perhaps) misplaced sense of urgency I think many of us can relate to. The prison part is tricky... either they live some kind forbidden love which would lead to them being cast away by others or perhaps it is a reference to restrictions imposed by life itself that could set them apart. In any case he feels confident he can overcome it, "knock it down". "I saw our shadows dance before the dawn" - again, the idea of imagining them together that night. Anyway, fantastic song. Looking forward for the new album. |
