Morphine – Buena Lyrics 12 years ago
This was my first Morphine favorite back in the '90s and I always thought it was about opiates. He's trying to clue us in to some secret, so it's not about sex. And he mentions how the devil turned him onto it, so it's probably taboo or illegal. Big deal, guys, so he wrote a song about a drug. It didn't make anyone I know start using opiates. It's just a great freakin' song that could have been about the moon or the ocean. Doesn't matter. I just wish he was still writing songs...

Morphine – Buena Lyrics 12 years ago
According to his roommate he did smoke weed pretty heavily for a while, saying that he'd have gone comatose had he smoked as much as Sandman, and his parents said he was into mushrooms and other stuff while traveling before he started playing in bands. What he did later only Billy and Dana know, and they said he was not doing drugs by then.

Sleepytime Gorilla Museum – Phthisis Lyrics 14 years ago
The past fades, weakens, dies (phthisis) while the future ignores its knowledge and warnings with contempt. Yup. Might be called "Generations" as well.

Sleepytime Gorilla Museum – Gunday's Child Lyrics 14 years ago
It's not unique to contrast the horror of war with youth - recall LBJ's effective commercial against Goldwater. In this play on the enigmatic "Monday's Child" poem I like SGM's added story done in the Robert Wyatt falsetto. This is/was a great band on many levels.

Sleepytime Gorilla Museum – Sleep Is Wrong Lyrics 14 years ago
I always hear youth understanding the concept of death for the first time yet denying its power over them, possibly blaming the parents for ultimately dooming them to death by giving them existence (I'm never going home). Thomas' poem excerpt sums up the song, but from a youth's perspective. If I'm right, the interesting thing is how youth rarely cares about the distant fate, unless some catastrophe jars them into contemplation of mortality, yet the POV is from someone who shouldn't yet be bothered by it.
