to me this song is clear,it hit home like a ton of briks and i actually cried when i heard it. he lost his love and turns to drugs to try to forget her, the devil is the voice of addiction. this is what i hear from him "Someone sang your name today and a stranger saw me crumble Hold my broken heart and shell away = something reminded me of u today and it hurt so much i broke down and didnt care who saw me cry. begging "bury me beside you"=this hurts so much God please id rather be dead. "The devil bent my ear today about his magical elixer" That would make the sorrow go away, help me forget I'd ever met you" the reason i say its a love and not a death is becouse he says "help me forget I'd ever met you" who would beg to forget his dead mom or loved one? who wants to remember someone u loved and broke up with? i could see it hurting so much u would want to forget a death but in this case its more than likely a woman he loved. when the devil bends your ear its usually means your addiction is knawing at u and u want a fix, basically u thought about drugs or want them badddd. nobody said anything to him its all in his head, thats how addiction is, u start having two people in your head discussing your problem, usually the addict part is more convincing and wins out over truth and reason. this is maynard, u gotta look deeper into what he is saying, he doesnt just say it, like a bakers dozen, yea its a number and pills are by number not weight or volume but i believe its just a reference to addiction. i immedietly thought of pills but maynard is too crafty to just say it outright, look at all his songs, they mean different things to different people and are always open for interpretation ' |
