This is about materialism and excess. California is used as the setting, but it could relate to anywhere in America. Don Henley in the London Daily Mail November 9, 2007 said: "Some of the wilder interpretations of that song have been amazing. It was really about the excesses of American culture and certain girls we knew. But it was also about the uneasy balance between art and commerce." On November 25, 2007 Henley appeared on the TV news show 60 Minutes, where he was told, "everyone wants to know what this song means." Henley replied: "I know, it's so boring. It's a song about the dark underbelly of the American Dream, and about excess in America which was something we knew about." |

Lyrics such as "Romeo and Juliet are together in eternity" have led many listeners to interpret the song to be about a murder-suicide pact, but Dharma (writer) says the song is about eternal love, not suicide: "I felt that I had just achieved some kind of resonance with the psychology of people when I came up with that, I was actually kind of appalled when I first realized that some people were seeing it as an advertisement for suicide or something that was not my intention at all. It is, like, not to be afraid of it (as opposed to actively bring it about). It's basically a love song where the love transcends the actual physical existence of the partners." |

You're right, it was written for Tusk, at which time she was actually in a relationship with Mick Fleetwood (who then left her dfor her best friend Sara during the recording for the album) so it could be about Mick. I secretly hope that its about Lindsey though :) The lines " I loved you from the start" and "Though the love has always been" seems to indicate a much longer relationship at the start of the fleetwood mac journey- she knew Lindsey while in school and they had a long tumultuous relationship however there were always feelings there, even now. Also the fact she talks about dealing with the road, suggests to me that it is, again, about Lindsey. While on tour for Rumours, Lindsey was dating Carol Ann Harris, something that was incredibly difficult for Stevie to deal with for 24 hours a day! But who knows, like you say, an absolutely beautiful song! |
