I think you have it right and I'm surprised that you're the only one giving this interpretation. First off this is the last track of their last album. It is quite unusual for a band to break-up in the midst of such success and they had to explain why they retired. Well, this track is the answer. "Take me home" They want to go back home, they are tired of travelling around. "Because it's everything, no everything was never the deal" They don't want their life to be LCD Soundsystem. Their life is more than that and at the moment it's the only thing that matters. "So grab your thing and stumble into the night so we can shut the door on terrible times" They've probably have had great experiences but they also had some very bad times that they want to put behind now. Then he starts to talk to us: "But under lights, we're all unsure, so tell me, what would make you feel better" Here he's aware that us fans will be disappointed when they retire, but what can he do? Then there's a mistake in the lyrics here, it's: "And love and rock are fickle things", meaning: The love between a rock star and his audience is a fickle thing that you cannot hold onto. Then he merges the experience of loving a band with the real relationships that we have in our lives and this is where I think this song is so powerful. What I think he says is this: The memories and good times will never be forgotten, whatever happens. So the love of the band, like the love of a girl/boy will never cease to exist. The same way that you can remember the good times you had with a past love, you can remember the good times you had listening to their albums and going to their concerts, this will be eternal. There's a movie that goes very well with this song: 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind'. A must see. |
