Oh god.. how I love this song. It's just.. life. I think really everyone has been through this, and that is what makes the song so striking. There is so much in it. I've heard it lying on my bed, and I had to hear it again and again. I got up to read the lyrics, it took me like 2 hours that it made sense to me. At the beginning there are just two young people in a small village, he's loving her, but she doesn't respond his love. He gets drunken and tries to find a substitute for her, but that other girl leaves him the next morning, and he is alone again. in my opinion, the "ball" is the queens marriage. the queen is crying for joy, and it's the last chance for the lyrical I to express his love. That he didn't do it is getting him down. I guess everyone knows this feeling.. just: "God damned.. What had happened if i did something else?" In the last stanza the lyrical I returns to the village where both grew up, he goes to her old house, but there are only some grazing goats. What I like the most is the very end of the song. "And a-roving I'll end up for certain." This picture. The girl he loved, sitting in her castle, and him, an aroving beggar. There could not be a major gap. I think this is what the last verse is about. The girl moved away, and slow, but certain her past disappears, and only the memories of the lyrical I remain. It might be the fear to be forgotten by someone else, while you can not get him out of your brain. |
