| This song to me is about coping with a relationship that left you brokenhearted by going out a lot and being promiscuous to forget the hurt. | |

I agree with the general consensus that the song is essentially about an insecure woman who is afraid to be alone and is willing to completely refashion herself for a guy, according to what she thinks he wants. I think the guy cheats on her or flirts with other girls, ("I heard you like the bad girls/Honey is that true?") and she gets the idea into her head that those are the kind of girls he likes, so that's whats he has to become. The second verse, however, is a little bit harder to interpret, but I think it really holds the key to the real meaning of the song. I think it's illustrating how her devotion to this guy has arrested her development. I sort of see her as this small town girl who probably went to high school with him, and they're still doing the same things they've done since they were kids. They and their group of friends were probably the cool, "In" clique at school ("Living for the 'fame'") and that's their only validation so they're holding on to it for dear life. Everyone is afraid of evolving and maturing. Even the title and repeated lyric "Playing video games" brings to mind immaturity and childish pastimes, and their lives ARE a sort of video game; a simulation of real life. This girl can't leave and grow and start a real, fulfilled adult life because she is so focused on making this loser want her, and she's willing to stifle her progression for him. |
