Bad Religion – American Jesus Lyrics 12 years ago
americans are perceived, accurately, by the rest of the world as self absorbed and arrogant. i am american and can attest first hand that ppl in this country are largely ignorant to what goes on in the rest of the world. we rely on the american media and politicians to form our beliefs. our perspective is skewed solely because we live here, and the government and media do everything possible to keep us that way. you go into almost any public school in america and more than half of the students can't point to africa or iraq on a map..some teachers to. sad. for a country with so many resources our education ranks 17th or worse internationally. this is what the government wants. knowledge is power and americans are some of the most powerless people on the planet despite having so much luxury.

the truth is simple and it is only made complicated by modern life. we all have the truth/innerlogic inside us but modern society conditions it out of us.

soooo sad that ppl have this take on such a positive song. you ppl are seriously lost and honestly miss the whole point of BR when you only see certain lines with blinders on. if these are the lines of the song that stick out most to you then you have issues.

Bad Religion – Slumber Lyrics 12 years ago
man oh man the irony. he is speaking directly to ppl like you. if you think it is sarcastic to your life is meaningful them you are the target audience and you don't even know it. he is saying your life is meaningful so stop sulking and use this life to have the impact you were meant to. he is not saying the only meaningful thing we offer is destroying the whole planet but that ppl who think life is meaningless and nothing matters are destroying the planet through complacency. if we all take his advice and realize our life is historically meaningful then we will act accordingly and potentially stop the destruction. you need some BR 101 sir

Bad Religion – Slumber Lyrics 12 years ago
dude you are waaaay off base on your first statement. it is not sarcastic in anyway. remember he is speaking to someone who feels like their life has no meaning and everything is pointless. to that BR is saying no you can make a difference. they are speaking out against the complacence of this person and ppl in general who think like that. if we don't beleive our life is significant then we don't act to make the world better hence we assure slumber will come sooner. this is a positive song with a positive message telling people to stop sulking and bitching, stop thinking life is meaningless, and get off your ass and do something with the short life you have.

Bad Religion – Atomic Garden Lyrics 12 years ago
"Everybody wants to dance in a playpen. But nobody wants to play in my garden .I see the hippies on an angry line. Guess they don't get my meaning"
this part of the song is saying that everyone wants to enjoy the freedoms we have, but also want to ignore the fact we have them because we have the potential to blow those that threaten it off the face of the planet, hence no one wants to acknowledge this fact(play in his garden) as they blissfully enjoy what the garden provides. this is told from the eyes of the government which is why he say's "i guess they don't get my meaning", they don't understand it is necessary, which is what government thinks, to have these bombs...that point is furthered by the fact he said " i wish i had something bigger that would really go pop so i could make the gardening stop". again this is the mentality of government and empires who think the only way to have peace is to have the biggest weapon/army...let me back up because he leads into these previous lines with some references that make the speaker sound like he is an innocent/naive baby. it demonstrates simplistic, flawed logic that a small child would use to solve the problem, so he is saying the government thinks like a baby or juvenile. we need to grow up if we are to ever truly achieve peace without war and violence....good luck with that though. lol

The Breeders – Lime House Lyrics 12 years ago
it is definitely about relapse and the tar is black tar heroin. as said before the lime house is probably the drug house she frequented. if you have been through recovery you are familiar with the story "Autobiography in 5 Short Chapters" by Portia Nelson. the first verse of this song is a play on that story. i walk down the street and fall down...in Portia's story she falls in a hole over and over symbolizing relapse(to an addict but can have a broader meaning as well) since for addicts the hole symbolizes relapse it is clear then the meaning in the song when she says "i walk by(probably the lime house), i fall down for for warm black tar forms balls and black tar baby"(the lime house and heroin is her hole)...next thing she knows she is back in the lime house using again. in portia's story this happens repeatedly until she realizes she needs to walk down a different street

The Breeders – Metal Man Lyrics 12 years ago
i have no idea how you think that interpretation is a literal one. if you want to be literal then it is about someone doing arc welding on an old car. "lying down with metal bars over my face"... is lying down with a welding mask on. "repairing my three on a tree""... that was explained already as a 3 speed transmission with the shifter on the steering column. "over my head the hot wire was sparking"... if you have ever seen arc welding it is pretty obvious what this is. and the melted filler stick would easily be 2000 degrees and could certainly drip on you and it is silver. case closed ppl. sometimes a song has no deep hidden mystery just enjoy

well i wont dishoner cobain by analyzing a song he wishes he never wrote. that said the lyrics really personified the whole slacker mentality of genX. i was like 14 at the time and right in the middle of the whole apathy thing

Nirvana – Rape Me Lyrics 12 years ago
guys it's not about rape. yes he's a feminist and all and while i don't doubt your quotes kurt often contradicted himself to the press sometimes i think just to fuck with them by telling them what they already thought to be true. back in the early 90's after inutero came out i read a rolling stones interview about how that whole album was a f u to their label for trying to get them to be a certain way mainly like nevermind. that is why they had songs like tourrettes. it was designed to turn posers off of their music. in cobain style the song itself says more than the lyrics. what i mean is he purposely made it sound like teen spririt which was the bain of his existence. the rape me refers to the label raping his creativity by wanting more songs like teen spirit and albums like nevermind.

Nirvana – Even in His Youth Lyrics 12 years ago
i believe the lyrics are "hope i don't come back a stain"1rst time. "hope i don't come back the same"2nd time. "hope i don't come back again"3rd time. if i were to over analyze the meaning for that sequence i would say the 1rst time he blames his parents because stain is what kurt often uses when refering to what his parents made him feel like. 2nd time he blames himself and says he doesn't want to come back the same. finally he just says F it i don't want to come back at all.
also the word something is used both times the first time around and are replaced by nothing and going nowhere. this follows the same pattern of "blame". he felt he something and they were wrong then he agrees later and says he was nothing and going nowhere. kurt often does this in his lyrics. he uses different structure to portray meaning more so/ than the actual lyrics.

Nirvana – Stain Lyrics 12 years ago
it is sorta a continuation of blew. in blew he refers to himself as his parents stain and the overall meaning of that song is about being smothered and shamed by parents. in this song the result that is what is wrote about. you kinda need to read my meaning for that song to see what i mean but blew was what happened growing up and this song is about what that turned him into. in both szongs he is the stain

Nirvana – Blew Lyrics 12 years ago
my guess is it is about being smothered and shamed most likely by parents. i'll go too far here and say the word blew actually is mispeeled blue not the past tense for blow. reason being it starts from a little kids perspective for wanting to pick out his/her own clothes for example(i would like it blue). would like to lose is later in life when a parent gets the little league coach syndrome(we all know how he hated the jock scene). then he gets older yet and would like to leave and as an adult he is still smothered and finally says he would like to breathe(get off my back already!!). is there another reason for your stain refers to him as his parents stain because he never felt good enough in their eyes and it feels like the only reason he was there was to be shamed to make themselves feel better. it goes on to say all he felt was stress strain and shame. i realize i probably went too deep but given what i know about kurt this makes some sense to me.

Nirvana – Big Long Now Lyrics 12 years ago
i tend to agree with you although i'll add he usually makes several unrelated statements in his songs that have meaning individually but not neccessarily as a whole.
the times when his song has an overall meaning it is usually sarcastic and not what ppl think. perfect example "come as you are" is not about being yourself as most ppl think.
now for "big long now". this song is pretty straight forward though. it is a bout a girl he likes and can't get her attention. example "She is moving through Can we show our faces now? I'm not interesting. She's not turning green" - he is trying to make a girl jealous / get her attention, by being seen with someone else, and later he says "Endless climb I am blind" meaning its a lost cause why is he torturing himself over this girl, and then "i am blind, waiting in line" means trying to get her attention is like waiting in line and again he is blind for not seeing its hopeless.

Nirvana – Come As You Are Lyrics 12 years ago
most of you are missing the point completely. it's sarcastic and about revenge. "come doused in mud soaked in bleach as i want u to be." "take a rest as a freind" and the sarcastic "no i don't have a gun". it is pretty clear someone that was a freind betrayed him and he wants revenge in the guise of a meeting as a freind

it was probably inspired by "invasion of the body snatchers" as that fits the bill for the misfits theme of being inspired by old B horror and sci-fi movies.

Tool – Jerk-Off Lyrics 13 years ago
it is a song about governing your own moral compass. people expect society to judge and punish but this system does not work as it is imperfect. therefor it raises the question how do we deter people from doing wrong if society is reinforcing behavior by its own inability to catch and punish everyone. if we buy into the belief that society is judge and executioner then we are one step away from justifying our own bad deeds. we need to be at peace with ourselves and our own moral compass to not go down to others level to get justice. i know tool is not supposed to be pro god at all but this song comes close in that they acknowledge punishment is left to god not society and impatients leads the person to want to take it into his own hands. since impatients is a negative quality i can deduce that they are saying the natural order of things is that god punishes as he sees fit and its not for us or society to question it at least not if we want inner peace.

Tool – Hush Lyrics 13 years ago
i see this song two ways.
one is that its a passive aggressive song about censorship
the second and more likely given tools other songs is that it is talking about how we are molded to avoid our "shadow selves" (see carl jung). As children we are taught and society reinforces certain taboos and beliefs. even joking about these taboos is considered odd behavior and forces that side of us into the shadowich . facing and accepting these thoughts and feelings as part of us is key to growth. he is being himself and saying he is not going to do what society says because just because its taboo. he instead embraces that side and shows some passive agressivness by saying something offensive. the irony i think is he is just kidding and hes not being sarcastic. the point is to show others that being uncomfortable about just the words not the intent is ridiculous. for example i could say i don't like so and so and in my heart want to kill them but thats socially acceptable to actually not like someone or even hate someone but oddly enough people are more put off by a joke or humor that is in "bad taste".

Tool – Swamp Song Lyrics 13 years ago
i believe its about defense mechanisms of a truly troubled person. what i mean is how a deeply troubled person acts a certain way to push people away. in essence he is the bog and if you try to get close you'll get what what you deserve because you didn't heed the warning (or defense mechanisms). kinda like how a deeply angry person pushes people away and any reaction he has as nasty as it may be is warrented because "no one invited you in" and "you didn't heed my warnings" so now its your stupid fault i hurt you.

Tool – Prison Sex Lyrics 13 years ago
ok this song is for one about exactly what it sounds like - rape - but more importantly the psychology of a rapist. now take it a step further i beleive he uses this example to get accross a broader point. that point is that when horrible or traumatizing things happen in our past especially childhood it has a certain affect on people. one way some people deal with it is by inflicting pain on others as an outlet. "you are my martyr my lamb" means that you must suufer / be sacrificed for me to feel better or maybe to feel anything at all. hands bound and head down obviously works as a rape visual but also as a symbol that he is a slave bound to repeat these horrors without controlle or so it seems.

Tool – Flood Lyrics 13 years ago
this song is about something happening that forces you to look at the truth not the delusions that you had before that kept you comfortable and avoiding your pain . kinda like when an addict hits bottom or something happens that even he or she can no longer pretend there is no problem (admitting powerlessness). As the song says no matter how tight we hold on to these delusons or how deep we bury them eventually the flood will come and expose it. at that point the song deals with what we do then. in the song he or she decides to build another "rock out of false delusions" and the flood comes higher and overtakes them again. not until we face our fears, shortcomings etc.. will we be cleansed by the water which is the symbol of reality and acceptence in this case. tool seems to have this as a recurring theme (facing the past and fears to grow stronger - eg. 46 and 2)

Tool – Sober Lyrics 13 years ago
the light at the end of the tunnel is in 46 and 2. which is a continuation of the shadow reference in begginning this song. in sober he is "stalked" and controlled by his shadow self (see carl jung) and can't push through till he faces and accepts it in 46 and 2. At that point real change can occur. oddly enough this has personal meaning for me because i learned about shadow self and jung in therapy while getting sober myself.
